Insurance for Student Placements
Work Experience / Field Trips / Site Visits
- Students participating in placements do not receive workers
compensation entitlements.
- Medical expenses incurred on placement should initially be
claimed on Medicare or private health insurance as applicable.
Conditions for Insurance Cover:
- The Placement is relevant to the
students current Program of study.
- The Placement is University approved (by way of a completed
FS23 form
or Affiliation Agreement)
- FS23 form or Affiliation Agreement has been signed by the host
organisation.
- No payment for services is being received by the student.
- The Placement does not exceed 16 weeks. (Placements are not
insured past 16 weeks unless approved in advance by the
Insurance Office).
- The Placement does not extend past the students study end date.
(Specifically once the student has qualified to graduate).
- Placements in the USA or Canada can not be approved without
first seeking advice from the
Insurance Office.
There are limitations on the insurance we hold in these countries.
Summary of Covers:
- Public Liability - provides cover for the negligent acts
of a student that results in property damage, illness or
injury to a third party (excluding professional services).
- Professional Indemnity - provides cover for the negligent
actions of students
in respect to breach of professional duty and/or the execution of
professional services (excluding medical duties/activities).
- Medical Malpractice - provides cover for the negligent
actions of students in respect to medical duties/activities,
including but not limited to the provision of
advice, therapy, treatment or medication.
- Student Personal Accident(1) - provides cover for students
while on placement and while travelling directly to and from
placement. This policy is a capital benefits policy providing
benefits for: temporary or permanent total disablement; death;
loss of income; and limited medical. This policy does not include cover for medical
expenses incurred within Australia that are covered (in whole or in
part) by Medicare.
- Travel Insurance - when a placement is a compulsory
program requirement and a student is required to travel more than 100kms the
University may be able to provide students with travel insurance. This
policy provides cover
for: emergency overseas medical expenses; loss/theft or damage to
baggage and belongings, electronic equipment; loss of deposits or
travel documents; personal liability etc. You need to contact the
Insurance Office for
an assessment on your eligibility.
(1) Uninsurable Medical Expenses
- Uninsurable medical expenses refers to any, or part of any,
expenses for which a Medicare benefit is paid or payable including
the balance of any monies due or payable by the patient after
deduction of any Medicare benefit or rebate from the actual expenses
incurred, commonly known as the Medicare Gap.
- The National Health Act 1953 - Sect 67 “prohibits Insurers who
are not a registered organisation, from making any payment or
contribution for Medical expenses which are claimable through
Medicare.”
