Where do I get proof of Insurance if I am asked for it?
If you are completing a form that asks for details on our Public Liability or another policy, please see the Insurance Policies table. If you require certificates for insurance, please email the Insurance Office.
Contact the Insurance Office and you will be advised on your eligibility to claim. You will then be provided with a claim form and advised of the excess amount that applies.
Are my personal belongings covered if they are stolen on University grounds?
Contact security to advise of the theft.
Your goods may be claimable through your home/building contents insurance policy with a much lower or nil excess (domestic policies generally carry excesses from $100 up). In the first instance you are directed to contact your own insurer to check cover for your belongings while outside of the home. If no claim can be made on your policy, some personal belongings are covered under the University’s Industrial Special Risks Property policy.
These include items you normally carry or store at your workplace for business use.
The excess amount (deductible) on claims for these items is $500. Therefore if your loss amount is below $500 you cannot make a claim. Contact the Insurance Office if you would like to discuss the potential of a claim. In the case of any insurance claim you will be required to report loss to the police and supply to the insurer a Police Report Number.
Are my personal belongings covered while travelling on University Business?
In most circumstances. Please see FAQ’s for Travel Insurance.
What Insurance cover do we have for Student Placements?
Every placement student must have a University authorised, Host organisation signed FS23 form or Affiliation Agreement prior to commencement.
What if the Placement is not an essential part, or a requirement of, the course?
The University may still be able to offer Insurance coverage for those students that organise their own Work Experience or take an offer of a Placement that won’t form part of their assessment. The experience must be relevant to the course of study. As above, every student must have the authorised FS23 form completed prior to commencement.
What Insurance cover do we have for Field trips or Site visits?
The same rules apply. The host organisation (for example construction site or factory owner) must sign the FS23 form. Please see Insurance for Student Placements.
What Insurance do we have for University property?
Please see Details of Insurance Policies and read the summary on University Property.
Note that while travelling over 100km away, the property receives cover under the Travel Insurance policy and the excess will differ.
Why do the Insurance Policies expire on the 1st November every year?
Each year the Insurance Policies are reassessed for the level of cover and benefits they provide the University. The Insurance Office will conduct an annual Uni-wide survey to collect information on our existing and proposed activities, and update our statistics and asset values. Using this information and considering our changing needs, appropriate policies are purchased through our Insurance Broker from various insurers to provide adequate and cost effective cover. Therefore on renewal of the policies some details may change such as policy number, the insurer we use, the excess, and limit. We pay for our Insurance in November each year. The Certificates of Currency will have the expiry date of 01/11 as this is the cover we have purchased so far. New Certificates are issued once the new Insurance period has been paid for. As we cannot be certain that we will purchase cover from the same insurer, we can only show evidence of the currency of that particular policy number until expiry.
I have a contract that needs checking for insurance
Forward all contracts requiring an insurance approval or review of indemnity clause to the Insurance Office by email. Please allow 5 working days for a response.
What about insurance for construction/building works have been contracted out?
Contract building works under $1 million are covered by the University's Public Liability policy. Cover is specific to the project only. The contractor should also hold their own Public Liability policy, otherwise they will run an uninsured exposure for incidents arising out of their negligence. Incidents not relating to the specific project are not covered by the University.
Who is responsible for the excess that is deducted from a claim?
Generally any excess deducted on settlement of a claim is borne by the cost centre making the claim.
For personal claims, such as travel insurance claims, the claimant can negotiate with their cost centre manager to have their excess reimbursed.
