Band 8A student contribution amounts are the University of South Australia's method of identifying student contribution amounts for pre-2009 students (as defined in the Information for Commonwealth Supported students booklet and below).
The cost of your education as a Commonwealth Supported Student is shared between what you pay and what the Government pays. Generally speaking the Commonwealth Government pays part of the cost of your education and as a student you pay a Student Contribution (formerly known as HECS). Student Contribution amounts are calculated per Unit of Study, which is equivalent to a 'course' at UniSA. Units of Study/courses are grouped into Bands which attract different Student Contribution amounts.
Your Student Contribution amount for each course is based on the Band amount (refer above for amount appropriate to you) and the EFTSL1 value of the course.
The formula for calculating your contribution amount for this course is:
EFTSL1 value for the course x Band amount
As an example:
MATH 3010 has an EFTSL1 value of 0.1252 and is a Band 8A course. You are enrolling in this course as a new student from 2009, so you are classified as a 'Student commencing from 2009'.
Therefore the Student Contribution Amount (fee) you will be required to pay for this course is equal to 0.125 x $4,520, or $565.003

As part of the 2008-09 Budget, the Australian Government are providing incentives for students to study mathematics and science. The Higher Education Support Act 2003 has been amended to reduce the maximum annual student contribution amount for students studying mathematics (including statistics) or science units of study from $7,412 a year to the lowest national priority rate of $4,162 in 2009 for an equivalent full-time student load. The reduction applies to all units of study in mathematics, statistics and science for commencing students regardless of their course of study (and existing students who transfer from a course of study that is not in the natural and physical sciences to one that is) from 1 January 2009. Existing students, (other than 'transferring' students as above) will continue under current arrangements and are classified pre-2009 students for this purpose.
If I am a pre-2009 student, what student contribution do I pay?
If you are a pre-2009 student, the maximum student contribution
amount per EFTSL1 , in 2009, for a course of study in mathematics,
statistics or science is the same as it would be had the Australian
Government not reduced the maximum. In 2011, this is $7,756 (indexed for
later years).
1The EFTSL (Equivalent Full Time Student Load) value is a measure of the study load for a course, as a measure of the total required study load for a full year in undertaking your program on a full-time basis.
2 Please note all EFTSL values are published and calculated at ten decimal places. Values are displayed to three decimal places for ease of interpretation.
3 If the amount calculated consists of whole dollars and a number of cents, the amount will be rounded down to the nearest whole dollar.
