Evacuation procedures

These procedures are the second of four components of the University of South Australia’s Emergency Response Plan.

Emergency situations on campus are managed according to procedures identified in the Emergency Response Manual. A Chief Response Officer is designated for every emergency and a Campus Response Team established.

To assist in emergency situations where building evacuation is necessary, the University trains nominated individuals to act in the following roles:

  1. Commence evacuation if the circumstances on their floor warrant this
  2. Communicate with the Building Evacuation Officer by whatever means available and act on their instructions - Co-opt persons as required to perform wardens duties

In the absence of designated evacuation officers and floor/area wardens, University Security Staff will act in these roles. In an evacuation situation the BEO's, DBEO's and the Wardens are considered to be acting under the instructions of the Chief Response Officer. They are authorised to direct all personnel inside buildings or on University grounds to evacuate.

A register of evacuation personnel is maintained by the Campus Services Coordinators on each campus—The register is located in the Security office.

Signage on the inside walls of every campus building identifies the nearest exit routes in an evacuation. It also identifies the appropriate assembly point for each building. The signage is maintained by Campus Services. Campus Facilities Managers, acting on behalf of the Director of Services are responsible for ensuring that all staff and students receive information on procedures to be followed in emergency situations.

Trained first aid officers will provide emergency assistance where necessary. Campus Facilities Managers will maintain a register of first aid officers on each campus. All University Security officers are trained first aid officers and a first aid kit is contained with all University Security offices.

Academic staff will ensure that all students are evacuated from teaching areas in an orderly manner.
