Background
In 1998, concerns were raised over the utilisation of the University's
buildings. This lead to an investigation into methods of achieving
greater accountability and efficiency thereby allowing a reduction in
capital building costs and ongoing ownership expenses.
During 1999, phase one of the University's space management system (UniSpace)
was implemented in the Property Unit (Facilities Management Unit). This involved the use of three data sources; room
data, teaching activity data
from Syllabus Plus and selected employee data from UniSAinfo. From which space utilisation is assessed in all
useable rooms in terms of occupancy and frequency.
Phase two of UniSpace created a corporate space database and distributed
it to selected Campus Services, Information Strategy & Technology Services and
Student & Academic Services staff.
Phase three of UniSpace which allows for the recording of
additional room attributes such as white boards, audio-visual facilities
and other teaching aids for use in Syllabus Plus will be completed by
the end of 2005.
