Karen White "During my studies, I received a scholarship to travel overseas on exchange to South Korea, presenting me with a fantastic opportunity to undertake an intensive cultural and language program. I work with many nurses for whom English is a second language, and the exchange experience has given me valuable personal insights that will increase my capacity to support these individuals." |
International short-term study or placement
An undergraduate or postgraduate (coursework) student wishing to undertake an international short-term study or placement at a university or work place may be eligible to apply for a travel grant. Whilst the duration of the study or placement would be less than a study period, to be eligible for a travel grant confirmation that you will receive a minimum 4.5 units credit toward your UniSA program must be included in the application.
Students may not be enrolled at UniSA during their international study or placement and if not must complete and submit an Application for Credit form signed by their Program Director on their return.
Any student undertaking placement overseas must ensure that a signed Placement/Affiliation Agreement or FS23 form is in place with the Host Organisation. The placement administration unit for the School/Division (for example, in the Division of Health Sciences, the Clinical Placement Unit) will be able to advise re which of these is required and will facilitate what is necessary to arrange this.
If a placement is of a clinical nature (e.g. Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Medical Radiation, Nursing & Midwifery placements etc.) Medical Malpractice insurance is required. Students are not permitted to undertake clinical placement in the USA or Canada as the University does not hold Medical Malpractice in these countries.
Research and Fieldwork activities of a clinical nature require
confirmation of insurance cover prior to
work commencing.
Details on opportunities can be found on the Short-term and study tour opportunities webpage.

Hawke Ambassador International Volunteer Experience Program
The School of International Studies and The Hawke Centre offer this program to students undertaking their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of the:
- Bachelor of Arts (International Studies)
- Bachelor of Applied Languages and Intercultural Communication
- Double degree programs with International Studies, including International Business, Management, Marketing, Journalism and Social Work and Social Policy
The program is worth 18 units toward your current program and differs from traditional exchange as students are based within an international non-government organisation (NGO) usually in an overseas location and working as a volunteer, rather than undertaking formal study at an overseas university.
Insurance
UniSA may be able to provide travel insurance to Hawke Ambassador students
at no cost. Please contact
UniSA's Insurance Officer to see if you qualify.
If the duration of your program is longer than 180 days or you are undertaking small amounts of personal travel, you will be required to organise an extension to the University's insurance and pay the additional costs involved with covering you for that period. UniSA's Insurance Officer will need to know your travel dates including any personal travel to advise on specific regulations.
To apply for the Hawke Ambassador International Volunteer Experience Program, please complete the online application form.
Full details of the program can be found on the Hawke Centre website (opens in a new browser window).
Application deadlines
UniSA Study Period 2 (Feb July): 30 June of the
previous year
UniSA Study Period 5 (July Dec): 30 November of the
previous year
Postgraduate by research
Students undertaking a Doctoral degree (PhD or Research Professional Doctorate) or upgrading to a Doctoral degree from a Masters by Research degree may apply for a travel grant to support their international research, data collection or work with institutional or industry partners in overseas locations. Travel grants can be applied for through the Research Degrees Office. Information on criteria and application closing dates can also be found at the above link.
Study abroad
If you wish to study in a country or university with which this University does not have an exchange agreement, you will need to research your own program and take care of your own arrangements. You may want to ask academic staff in your School or Division for any contacts they may have in the country or university of your choice. You will then need to make contact with the overseas institution for application and fee information. Please be aware that this informal style of arranging study abroad is very time-consuming to plan and can be very expensive as you will be required to pay fees to the host institutions in most cases and take leave of absence from your UniSA program. Credit arrangements will also need to be discussed with your Program Director.
