Credit Equivalencies
All students on exchange must complete the equivalent of a full time load while on exchange. This equates to either:
A minimum of 13.5 UniSA units OR
A maximum of 18 UniSA units
Each host university calculates course loads and credit differently, so you will need to negotiate with your Program Director to determine how many courses at the host university are equivalent to either 13.5 or 18 UniSA units. Some guidelines are listed below. However, the equivalency will be at the discretion of the Program Director.

Credits are measured by the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Generally 18 UniSA units = 30 ECTS however given the workload at this partner university it is acceptable to equate 18 UniSA units to 24 ECTS in this case. |

courses per semester. See Credits and Hours Code -

Carleton University |
A semester long course is worth (.5)
credits; a year long course is worth (1.0) credits. The recommended
full-course load for Undergraduate (first year - fourth year)
exchange students is (2.0) credits [maximum (2.5) credits] for a
semester. For a full academic year the recommended load is (4.0) or
a maximum of (5.0) credits. |

Concordia University |
Most courses are valued at 3 credits each
with the exception of intensive courses (usually language courses)
that are valued at 6 credits. Courses are approximately 39-40 hours
(excluding homework, presentations, projects, mid-term and final
exams) over a 13-14 week period. |
|
Ryerson University |
For a domestic student 4-6 courses is
considered a full course load on the basis that students pay the
same tuition for 4, 5 or 6 courses per semester. Unless it is a full
year course, each semester long course is of equal value (i.e. 1
credit). Ryerson recommendations: |
|
The University of Calgary |
Most courses are half credit courses, 3 credit hours. That means that students are in class 3 hours per week for a total of 13 weeks. Each half course usually has a total of 39 hours. Full courses run over both terms and students are in class 3 hours per week for 26 weeks and are 78 hours in length, 6 credit hours. All exchange students are required to take a minimum of 3 courses to maintain full time status and students can take up to 5 courses per term. |
|
University of Victoria |
There are 2 terms per year, each runs for
13 weeks. Each course is worth 1.5 units. Domestic students normally
complete five (1.5) unit courses per term. Each (1.5) course
requires 3 hours of study a week for one term. Laboratory, tutorial
and other similar activities, if required, are in addition to the
basic three hours a week. |

These rulings generally apply to students in business programs however the principles can be applied to other study areas upon negotiation with the Program Director. To study the equivalent of 18 units @
UniSA (full time load) we recommend one of the following options at
Bordeaux; To study the equivalent of 13.5 units @
UniSA (3/4 load) we recommend one of the following options at
Bordeaux; More Info: Normally 18 UniSA Units = 30 ECTS and 13.5 UniSA Units = 22.5 ECTS however the workload for exchange students going to Bordeaux has been renegotiated with Program Directors in the Division of Business. These calculations are based on a comparison of equivalent contact (or teaching) hours required. Each UniSA course requires 3 contact hours per week; therefore a student undertaking a full-time academic load (4 courses) at UniSA would have 12 contact hours per week. Each semester's teaching period is 13 weeks, therefore necessitating a total of 156 contact hours per semester. Each Bordeaux subject requires 15 contact hours, except French which requires 45 contact hours. Therefore, students undertaking either Option A or B for 18 UniSA Units will complete 150 contact hours per semester. Given that we've received feedback that French often requires more than the 45 prescribed contact hours and that the students are studying in an unfamiliar system where they may undertake an 'intensive' course early in the semester and then be required to undertake an exam at the end of the semester (with no swot vac time), a slight imbalance in teaching hours is acceptable. |

In principle, full-time students must register for a minimum of 14 credits and must remain enrolled for a minimum of 14 credits throughout the semester in order to satisfy the requirements for a student visa. A full year of study totals 30 credit units; as most classes carry an even number of credits, this usually translates into sixteen (16) credits one semester and fourteen (14) in the other if a student studies for a full year. One semester of 15/16 credits is usually equivalent to 18 UniSA units. |

Course credits at Valencia are measured using both the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and Spanish Credits. The following applies to ECTS; 18 UniSA
units = 30 ECTS and 13.5 UniSA units = 22.5 ECTS. All exchange students must complete a 2 week intensive Spanish course at the beginning of their exchange. The intensive course is located at the Gandia campus however it is not recommended that students select other courses at the Gandia or Alcoy campuses as they are located too far out of the city. 'AB' indicates a full year course. An example of a students enrolment may be; Spanish Intensive course 6 ECTS |
