About e-Research
The Australian Government recognises the enormous potential
of e-Research for Australia's research community. e-Research has the
potential to usher in a new era of innovation and help overcome the tyranny
of distance by allowing our researchers to work more efficiently and to
collaborate at the national and international level.
e-Research is 'large scale research that will increasingly be carried out through distributed global collaborations enabled by the Internet' (UK e-Science Programme).
Areas of impact
There are three broad areas where e-Research will have an impact:
- access to, and sharing of, large volumes of data together with advanced processing and data analysis resources distributed globally or regionally. This has value across a wide range of areas including health sciences and social sciences.
- access to, and sharing of, significant scientific machinery and instrumentation on a scale unaffordable by individual institutions. This has value extending across the physical sciences and engineering, including complex system science.
- availability of general infrastructure for virtual research partnerships involving enhanced research interaction and extended international participation with researchers and research students distributed globally. The availability and use of this infrastructure will impact on all areas of research in due course.
