While working as an electrician at a steel works, I often assisted
electrical engineers with their work and desired to have a deeper
understanding of the systems they worked on. After working in the
industry for 15 years I decided to go back to study as a mature age
student. I enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics and
Microengineering) (Honours) at the University of South Australia and
began studying at Mawson Lakes Campus.
After graduating in 2003 with First Class Honours, I acquired employment
at Tenix Defence as a Hardware Engineer. I am responsible for designing,
building and testing circuits for electronic systems. These processes
involve creating firmware for FPGA based systems and writing computer
software. I enjoy engineering as I am given the opportunity to be
creative by developing and designing systems which help make life
easier, safer and more fun. I value working around experienced people
who are able to enhance my knowledge.
Through my studies at The University of South Australia I was able to
gain the knowledge and experience to feel prepared and confident to
enter the workforce. I found staff to be very helpful and the support
gained during tutorial classes was of great benefit. The facilities and
learning resources had everything I needed, in particular the library
and laboratories. Support services were beneficial, especially Learning
Connection as they have so much to offer students.
