I started working as an apprentice Fitter and Machinist after I
left school, and then commenced Engineering studies to further my
knowledge in the area I was working in. I studied the Bachelor of
Engineering (Electical and Mechatronic Engineering) (honours)
part-time whilst I was working full-time. I chose to study at UniSA
as the program was more oriented towards the practical side of
engineering compared to other universitys programs.
After graduating in 2005, I started working at Mitsubishi Motors
Australia as a Project Engineer in the Plant Engineering Department.
My tasks include preparing and researching engineering
specifications to oversee the manufacture, delivery, installation
and commissioning of various pieces of equipment required for
vehicle manufacture. Completing my degree gave me greater confidence
and the ability to succeed in my role.
The automotive industry is a very exciting and challenging area as
it is fast moving to keep up to date with the latest technology. To
be successful in this industry you need to be a clear thinker who
has good analysis and problem solving skills and you also need to
have good people skills as you deal with a wide variety of people
from different organisations.
If you are interested in becoming an engineer, you need to enjoy
demanding, challenging and varied work. The chance of finding a job
in engineering once you finish your degree is high as it is an
industry in need of professionals.
