How to impress an employer
Making a good impression on your Industrial placement is important - as a result you may be offered a job. Also remember that when you are on placement you represent the University. If the employer is happy they are likely to take more students in future years.
Here are 7 suggestions for ways to impress the employer. This is particularly important for international students as work ethics are different in each country.
-
Be on time for work and meetings
You are responsible for finding the times and date you are required to attend. If you are unable to arrive on time, or will be absent due to illness, please phone the employer to explain. This is considered to be courtesy
-
Dress code
Most employers require you to be smart. Do not wear jeans, thongs, shorts or sand shoes/trainers. On your first day it is better to be overdressed. It is acceptable to ask about the dress code in advance. Once you have started, you can change you dress to fit in with your colleagues.
-
Meet with your Line Manager
Clarify the aims and outcomes of your placement at the beginning.
-
Be honest if you don't understand
It is best to ask your manager to explain something again if you did not understand. This is not considered to be rude in Australian culture. You are expected to ask as many questions as you need to until you fully understand.
-
Contribute to discussions
You may be asked for your opinion in a meeting. Although there is a hierarchy in Australian companies everyone is expected to contribute to the conversation. This is considered to be polite.
-
Occupational Health and Safety
Ensure you are aware and understand the organisations policy for Occupation Health and Safety
-
Write a letter afterwards to thank the employer
Although this is not expected, it would definitely impress the employer.
