Zorica Nedic and zdemir Gl, the Sessions Best Paper Award at
the 5th International Conference on Education and Information Systems,
Technologies and Applications held 12th-15th July in Orlando, Florida,
USA, for the paper entitled Collaborative learning in the remote
laboratory NetLab".
- Zorica Nedic and
Jan Machotka, the Best Paper Award including the laptop computer at the
4th International Conference on Remote Engineering & Virtual
Instrumentation (REV2007) held 25th-27th June in Porto, Portugal, for
the paper entitled Remote laboratory NetLab for effective teaching of
1st year engineering students. The REV2007 Organizing Committee
awarded it in recognition of its contribution to build a high-quality
technical program.

Silver Badge of Honour for distinguished contributions to engineering

- Krishnan Ananthakrishnan was part of South Australian team comprising
tertiary institutions and TAFEs which won Concentric Asia-Pacifics
Inaugural National Engineering Innovation Competition and prize of
$100,000 for their Formula-Vee racing car design which focused on
safety.

The team presented the following new and existing projects: Robotics Peer Mentoring, Indigenous Theatre Company (New), and Financial Literacy Website and Seminars (New). SIFE Presenters: Aaron Mohtar and Shivvaan Sathasilvam, postgraduate students from the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, and Leila Seith (SIFE President), Tim Martin and Kate Pepper from the Division of Business. Faculty SIFE Adviser: Zorica Nedic. The team competed against students from 26 universities on 6-8 July, 2006 in Brisbane and represent Australia in the SIFE World Cup on 11-14 September in Paris, France where they competed against 45 National Champions from all over the world.

- Patricia Curtis (PhD student), Australian Institute of Energy
Encouragement Award for PhD project proposal, Optical Enhancements of
Silicon Solar Cells. The $500 prize was awarded at the Institutes 2005
Postgraduate Student Energy Awards Forum and Dinner at the Hyatt Regency
on 3 November.

Yun Lim (final year LBIF students), 2006 Electromagnetic Compatibility
(EMC) Society of Australia Student Paper Competition (national winners),
for their presentation, Motorised Clamp Mechanism for EMC Testing.

and zdemir Gl. Prize: $1000, diplomas and inclusion in the
Australian EMC Society newsletter.

- Nicholas Cox (LBGT student), third prize jointly with student from
Flinders University, 2006 Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
Student Paper Presentation, 24 October, 2006. Project:
Co-channel Speaker Separation and its Integration with Transcription
Services within a Military Planning Environment. Project
Partners: Christopher Page and Florian Razvan. Supervisor:
Mahfuz Aziz.
2005
- Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team of EIE, University of South
Australia, consisting of four final year engineering students presenting
the Robotics Peer Mentoring Program, National Winner of 2005 SIFE
Competition. SIFE President and Presenter: Andrei Lloyd, and
Presenters: Simon Lane, Aaron Mohtar and Nathan Potter. Faculty SIFE
Adviser: Andrew Sprok. The competition was judged by 39 senior
executives of the Australian business community. Students from 22
universities competed on 9-10 July, 2005 in Sydney. The team was joined
by Shivvaan Sathasilvam and Sam England from the School, and Leila Seith
and Esther Holland from the Division of Business and Enterprise, to
represent the University in the SIFE World Cup on 5-7 October in
Toronto, Canada and compete with 45 national teams. The team was first
runner-up in their group. The Cup was attended by 1600 participants.
2004
- Aaron Mohtar (LBIF student), Golden Key International Honour
Society scholarship, $500. The award is bestowed for outstanding
commitment to scholastic achievement and excellence that distinguishes
the recipient within the university community.
- Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team from Mawson Lakes Campus,
University of South Australia, Runner-up in the Opening Round of 2004
SIFE Competition (beaten by the overall final winner to compete in
global competition). SIFE President: Andrei Lloyd, and team members:
Kerry Dunn, Marina Milosevsk, Richard Petty, Faculty SIFE adviser: Jan
Machotka. Students from 34 universities competed in the Pacific Brand
League of SIFE, 9-13 July, 2004, Melbourne.
- Richard Petty (LBIF student), 2nd place for presentation of the project
Implementation of a Mems-Based Pressure Sensor for Biomedical
Application, undergraduate IEE Student Paper Night, October 2004.

- Scott Carr and Andrew Sprok (LBIF students), 2004 ITEK Science and Engineering
Innovation Award, awarded to the students with the most commercial
potential final year engineering project within the Division of
Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment. Prize: $500.
Project Supervisors: Jan Machotka and Zorica Nedic.
- Mohammed Khazab (third year of Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics
and Microengineering) student), team member of the University
Orientation Program Project awarded 2004 UniSA Chancellors Award for
Community Service. In collaboration with community partners:
Fremont-Elizabeth City High School, Salisbury East High School,
Smithfield Plains High School, Craigmore High School, St Columba
College, Endeavour College, Paralowie High School and Salisbury High
School, the team has developed a program to facilitate the transition of
high school students to the University.

- Paul Calabro (LBGT student), 3rd place, undergraduate IEE Student Paper Night,
October 2003.
2002
- Zhen-Dan Bao (final year Computer Systems Engineering student), Best
Technical Paper 2002 in SA and NT, Younger Members Section of
Institution of Electrical Engineers.
2001
- Vitaly Ogulev (Computer Systems Engineering student) represented
Australia (one of 300 Australian athletes) in East Asian Games, 17-29
May 2001 in Osaka, Japan and took fifth place in classical wrestling. He
is current Australian Champion in 76 kg category and took second prize
in the National Australian Championships on 8 June in Roman-Greek
wrestling, 76 kg category.
- Mark Ford (LBIA student), Chia Hui Lee (LBIF student) and Jayaram Selvaraju
(LBIF student), 2001 UniSA
Chancellors Award for Community Service for their involvement in SA
Solar Car Consortium.
2000
- Paul Kay (final year Electronic Engineering student), SA State
winner (to compete in National Finals), 2000 Siemens Prize for
Innovation ($5000), for final year project Investigation into RF
Propagation Variation (Supervisor: A Nafalski). Awarded for the most
innovative and creative approach to the final year project, combined
with the ability to present clearly and persuasively to an audience.
- The Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Student
Branch, UniSA awarded Student Branch Centre of Excellence status and won
a grant of $6000 to establish technical library, computing facility and
video conferencing capabilities.
- David Culpin (graduating Electronic Engineering student), third
prize, Joint IEAust/IEE/IEEE Student Paper Night, October 2000. Awarded
for his presentation on Supersonic Camera Pod. DSTO sponsored the
project.
Graduate Awards
2004
- Purushottam Rao Yadlapalli (MEng (Information Technology and
Telecommunications) graduate), 2004 UniSA Chancellors Award for
Community Service. Supervisor of a project which is a community outreach
program where participants in a work for dole activity are trained to
refurbish computer hardware and software, to be donated to community
groups and disadvantaged people in need. The project was conducted in
ACS Community Computers (a non-profit organisation of the Australian
Computer Society) and supported by the Salvation Army Employment Plus.
- Andrew Skinner, Engineering Director of Measurement Engineering Australia (MEA) and graduate of SA Institute of Technology (UniSA predecessor) in 1987 was honoured at the official opening of the Starfish Hill Wind Farm in regard to his postgraduate work in investigating optimum sites for wind energy.
2003
- Wayne Piekarski (1999 Computer Systems Engineering graduate) and Bruce Thomas (School of Computer and Information Science), 2003 UniSA Innovation Award for Augmented Reality Project.
2000
- Justin McDonald, (1995 Civil Aviation graduate), Olympic Torch Bearer in Adelaide on 15 July, 2000. Justin was the Captain of the Australian Bobsleigh Team which competed in the Winter Olympics in 1994 where he received the Pierre de Coubertin Fair Play Trophy.
