Welcome to the Research Degrees site for the School of Education at UniSA. The school is part of the Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences.

In dealing with the administrative requirements of a research degree there are 3 levels of decision- making in terms of application, allocation of places and scholarships, enrolments, proposals, ethics protocols, management of data, privacy, confidentiality, annual reviews of progress, compliance with policies, selection of examiners and conferring degrees:

At each level there are committees and groups which will be involved in decision-making, so you will need to allow time for decisions to be made and proposals approved in the schedules you create for yourself.

If you are interested in applying for a place as a research student in the School of Education, please refer to the section For prospective research degree candidates.

If you are currently enrolled please refer to the section For current candidates.

For prospective research degree candidates

To apply for a research degree in the School of Education you will need to identify:

  • the broad requirements for the program: these can be found on the home pages of the various programs above; see also FAQs
  • the research interests of the school - see http://www.unisa.edu.au/eds/CREd.asp
  • a possible appropriate supervisor Ð you could search the staff home pages or enter a key research word into the Directory of Research Expertise
  • two academic referees
  • your general suitability for the program. The best way to do this is communicate directly with the specific program director who will also be able to help you think about possible supervisors
  • whether you meet the entry requirements for the program - see the home pages of the programs listed above or Entry requirements

The diagram showing Pathways to higher degrees is also useful

A research degree involves the following:

  • organising a supervisor
  • identifying an appropriate research topic
  • applying for a place (note: places are competitive)
  • once an offer of a place is made, enrolling in the program and in any required courses, either full-time or part-time, internally or externally, depending on your circumstances
  • developing a research proposal and ethics protocol according to University and Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences requirements. Proposals are required within:
    • MEd - 6 months full-time or 12 months part-time
    • PhD - 6 months full-time or 12 months part-time
    • EdD this is the requirement for completing EDUC 8028 (normally second semester of second year of part-time study)
