Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
Research Group
This is a highly international research group focusing on teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), primarily in the Asia-Pacific region. Our research is conducted in both bilingual and monolingual settings, with particular attention to how research can inform policy, curriculum and pedagogy within and across diverse cultural settings. The group focuses on topics central to the learning and teaching of English as an Additional Language (EAL), and EAL speakers from many different countries, including migrants, refugees and international students in English speaking countries. We are therefore committed to research, research education and research collaboration that is strongly intercultural in nature.
The TESOL Research Group is unique in that many of its members are international higher degree research students. They come from more than a dozen different countries, mainly across the Asia-Pacific Region, and each is working towards either a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) or EdD (Doctor of Education).
Goals over the coming years include:
- 15 to 20 doctoral completions
- An edited book on Teaching English in South-East Asian Universities
- Co-authoring journal articles
- setting up joint activities involving current group members and alumni working at other universities in the region
