Educating for sustainability: science, technology,
mathematics and environments
Research Group
This group provides a place for research in mathematics, science, environments and design and technology education with a sustainability focus. This research will inform the areas of curriculum and teacher practices/pedagogy. The rapid change of world environments, through rapidly growing population, powerful technologies, environmental degradation, and unsustainable consumerism provides the context for 21st Century education. Ian Lowe (2009) pleads for the necessity of technologically, mathematically, environmentally and scientifically literate educators, and the general population. Education is central to this objective and evidence based research is needed to inform teachers and administrators on how to do this effectively. The importance of connectivity to place is crucial for a sense of belonging for a sustainable world. Effectively using different ways of knowing to empower students, staff and the institution to reduce their ecological footprint is a part of the agenda.
