Cognitive Technologies in Education
Research Group
The aim of the group is to research the application of information and communication technologies for teaching and learning in education, informed by the disciplines of education, computer science, and cognitive psychology. The group has sound research programs that are currently advancing the understanding of the role of computers in enhancing cognitive capacities, especially in collaborative work, concept development, web-based learning and contemporary learning environments. The group is committed to addressing major national and systemic issues related to mathematics, ICT and science education. Strong partnerships have been developed locally and nationally through projects such as SiMERR and schemes such as ASISTM.
The Cognitive Technologies in Education Research Group is multidisciplinary in nature, drawing on and contributing to the fields of collaborative work, distance education, web design, human interface design, educational design, critical thinking and reasoning skills. The group is applying its expertise to the influences on student success at university and relaying its findings to academic staff. The group has been a long term partner with DECS in ICT and is embarking on a 3 year longitudinal study of teaching and learning in contemporary learning environments. Members of the group are key players in a range of professional societies and edit and referee for a number of journals. The next stage in the group's development is the winning of national and international major competitive grants.
