Divisional Research Degree Coordinators
Each School within the Division has at least one senior academic
appointed as a Research Degrees Coordinator (RDC). Large schools like
the School of Education have several RDCs to manage different research
degree programs.
RDCs have several key roles in the management of research degrees within
the Division. They are members of Divisional Research Degrees Committee, a
key decision making body which makes recommendations about research
degree scholarships, the nature and form of the Research Education
Program offered to candidates, candidate progress, and the examination
of theses. RDCs also assist the Dean of Research Degrees provide advice
to University committees on research degree matters.
At the School level, RDCs undertake the following roles:
• Recommend the acceptance or rejection of applications for entry to
research degree programs
• Advise Heads of School about the supervision capacity of staff, and
research degree workload
• Chair Research Proposal Panels which assess the quality of research
planned by research degree candidates and provide advice on ways to
improve the research
• Coordinate the Annual Review of Progress for all candidates, deal with
issues or problems between supervisors and candidates, and provide
pastoral care to candidates when life events threaten the progress of
their research
Finally, RDCs are an important link in the chain of approvals needed to
apply for leave, an extension of candidature, and when submitting a
thesis for examination.
RDCs are therefore key administrators of research degree policies and
procedures at the school level as well as the providers of significant
support and advice to students and supervisors on a wide range of
academic and candidate welfare issues.
