Higher Degree by Research Student - Divisional Funding

The Division has a number of reimbursable funding schemes available to all PhD, Masters and Professional Doctorate students enrolled within the Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences to be used for research-related expenses.

Research Degrees Support Fund

For study periods 2 and 5, full-time students can claim up to $250 and part-time students $125 for consumable items related to their research. Allowable expenses will vary dependent upon your area of study.  IT hardware such as computers and printers are not allowable under this scheme.   Original receipts must accompany every claim.  A minimum amount of $50 is payable for each claim. For amounts over $55 receipts must display an ABN number (tax invoice).

What can I claim for?

Stationery, printing, photocopying, books, journal subscriptions, monthly home internet provider costs (online receipts can be supplied), USB memory sticks, software packages, recording devices such as cameras and MP3  players, transcription services, freight costs, materials required for exhibitions.

What cant I claim for?

IT hardware and printers, transport costs, eg airfares, accommodation, petrol. 

Expenses involved with data collection are considered project costs and should be discussed with your school at the time of your research proposal.  These include expenses such as payment of interviewees, travel or accommodation expenses to collect data, advertising, etc. 

When can I claim?

Funds for the current study period may be claimed at any time after the start of the study period.

Can I claim for more than one study period at a time?

Yes.  One claim form only needs to be completed.

Can funds not claimed in one year be carried over into the next year?

Yes, funds can be carried over for one year only, eg Study Period 2 and 5 2007 may be claimed up until the end of 2008.  Therefore up to four study periods could be made in one claim.

Can international currency receipts be used?

Yes, you may claim for consumables purchased whilst overseas.  The Finance Department will arrange the currency conversion.


Conference Travel fund

Up to $1200 reimbursement for expenses related to attendance and presentation of a paper at a national or international conference is available during your candidature.    International students may use this fund to travel to Australia to meet with their supervisors.  Whilst in Australia, international students would be encouraged to present a paper, eg at the school level, EAS Division Forum or external conference.  All claims must include proof of registration and presentation at the conference (e.g. receipts and/or programs) and receipts related to expenses being claimed such as airfares and accommodation.

This fund is for conference presentation only and cannot be used when not presenting at a conference.
Claims cannot be made for expenses related to travel for the purpose of data collection.

When can I claim?
Claims may be in part or in full any time during your candidature.

Can I present at more than one conference?
Yes.

You need to complete the form below, have it endorsed by your supervisor and attach proof of presentation at the conference.  This may be the conference itinerary or a letter/email acceptance from the conference organisers and attach relevant receipts.


Publication Incentive Fund

1. HRD students in Education and Social Sciences disciplines
Research Degree students who publish a paper in a DEST recognised or international peer refereed journal will be entitled to a payment of $200 if they are the principal (first named) author of the paper or they co-author the paper with one of their supervisors. The $200 payment may be used to support any aspect of their research degree work (ie, travel, consumables, hardware, software, books, editing). Payments will be made when evidence of acceptance for publication in 2007 or 2008 is presented.
This scheme will also apply to chapters in books published by recognised commercial publishers.

 

2. HRD students in Art, Design and Architecture disciplines

Research Degree students undertaking projects within the fields of visual art, design and architecture who publish - through exhibition of original works of art or design in a recognised commercial gallery or state/federal museum (as the equivalent  of a DEST recognised or international peer refereed journal) - will be entitled to a payment of $200. They may also be entitled to receive this support if they collaborate in creating the exhibited work with one of their supervisors. The $200 payment may be used to support any aspect of their research degree work (ie, travel, consumables, hardware, software, books, editing). Payments will be made when evidence of acceptance for publication in 2007 or 2008 is presented (usually an invitation from the gallery or museum). The works of art or design exhibited must be created as part of the students research.

Exhibition allowance

Candidates in the South Australian School of Art and the Louis Laybourne School of Architecture and Design can claim a one off amount of up to $400 as reimbursement for expenses accrued in relation to their final year exhibition.

Thesis Binding Allowance

Where research candidates do not hold a scholarship, an allowance of $200 is available for the production and binding of the final copy of the thesis.  Complete the form and attach relevant receipts.

How to Make a Claim

Fill out the claim form, attach original relevant receipts and send to Julie White, Div EAS Research Office, H2-20, Amy Wheaton Building, Magill, SA 5072.  All claims must include valid receipts displaying the ABN .

How do I receive the payment?
Indicate on the claim form whether you wish to receive a cheque or have the money deposited into your bank account, supplying the account details, eg BSB, Account Name and Number.  If you wish the money to be deposited into an overseas account, you will need to also supply the Swift Number.  Please also indicate if you are a staff member as your details will already be recorded.
