Research Degrees in Education, Arts and Social Sciences
The
Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences is a large and diverse
collective which offers many research degree programs
at Masters and
Doctoral levels. These programs provide candidates with opportunities to:
- expand their research interests
- learn new research strategies and techniques and
- to contribute to the growth of new knowledge in traditional fields like social work, psychology and education, and new areas like cultural studies and multi-media communication.
- There are currently around 510 candidates enrolled in Divisional research degrees, making up more than a third of the Universitys funded Research Training Scheme places. Studying at this level is extremely challenging but very rewarding. The challenges come from engaging in the great debates about competing methodological and theoretical orientations within the social sciences, and from making the decisions necessary to undertake a piece of research which contributes to these debates. The rewards come from meeting those challenges, confirming personal and intellectual growth, and contributing to our diverse understanding of socially and culturally significant issues.
- The Division and its constituent Schools and Research Centres support research degree candidates through the provision of physical resources (office spaces, computers) expert supervision, and a series of seminar and research education programs.
