UniSA volunteer mentors
Enriching practicum experiences
UniSA Volunteer Mentors is a program linking experienced
professionals with international postgraduate education
students. Committed mentors who are experienced educators assist
international students to adapt to Australian culture and
learn about teaching in local schools.
Role of Mentors Mentors meet with a student for approximately an hour per
week – frequency and duration are negotiated between
students and mentors. Mentors will: • assist with understanding Australian culture and language • provide friendship and insights into living in Australia • help students problem-solve specific issues
• familiarise students with the education system by sharing
information • encourage discussion of similarities and
differences of school experiences
Mentors meet with students on campus, in cafés, in libraries
- the place is negotiated and flexible - and make contact
through phone or email.
Qualifications Mentors need to: • be skilled and committed
educational professionals • have time and motivation to share their knowledge and
skills • value the knowledge and skills of students • meet regularly with students (e.g. meet for an hour each
fortnight during a study period) • meet quarterly with other mentors to share ideas, raise
questions and receive relevant information.
Benefits In addition to the satisfaction of meeting new people and
discussing learning and teaching mentors will have:
• access to the UniSA library on each campus • opportunity to be part of initiating new ideas about
student learning • support through ongoing telephone and email contact with
the UniSA Volunteer Mentor Coordinator.
