2007 EAS Research Awards


On Tuesday, 22 November 2007 the Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences held the 2nd Annual Research Awards Ceremony at the Adelaide Zoo.  Over 120 staff, family and friends attended the ceremony to celebrate the research efforts being made by staff within the division with 15 awards being presented.

Distinguised Scholar
Professor Barbara Pocock - Centre for Work and Life

This award recognises an EAS researcher who has consistently demonstrated:

Professor Barbara Pocock is Director of the Centre for Work + Life, at the University of South Australia.  Professor Pocock has been researching work, employment and industrial relations for twenty five years. She has worked in many jobs – advising politicians, on farms, in unions, for governments and as a mother.  Her main areas of study have been work, employment relations, unions, inequality and vocational education.  She was initially trained as an economist. Her latest book, published in October 2006, is The Labour Market Ate my Babies: Work, Children and a Sustainable Future.  Her previous books include:

• The Work/Life Collision (2003)
• Strife; Sex and Politics in Labour Unions (1997) and
• Demanding Skill: Women and Technical Education in Australia (1988).

Mid Career Researcher

This award recognises EAS Researchers with 5 to 15 years post-doctoral experience who have demonstrated a consistent commitment to high quality research achievement.

Humanities - Associate Professor Helen Nixon - School of Education
Associate Professor Helen Nixon is a Key Researcher in the Hawke Research Institute (HRI) and Deputy Director of the Centre for Studies in Literacy, Policy and Learning Cultures. She is currently chief investigator on two ARC Linkage projects and an ARC Discovery project and has won several other grants funded by UniSA, the Myer Foundation, the Department for Education and Children’s Services and the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association. She has co-edited two books and has been published in national and international refereed journals and books.

Social Sciences - Associate Professor Maureen Dollard - School of Psychology
Associate Professor Maureen Dollard is Director of the University funded Centre for Applied Psychological Research and also holds the position of Research Portfolio Leader in the School of Psychology. Associate Professor Dollard has been a chief investigator on 12 Australian competitive research grants, most recently being awarded an ARC Discovery Grant, Working wounded or engaged? Australian work condition and consequences through the lens of the Jobs Demands Resources Model ($424,000).

Art, Architecture & Design - Dr Christine Garnaut - Louis Laybourne-Smith School of Architecture & Design
Dr Christine Garnaut is a Research Fellow and Director of the Architecture Museum with the Louis Laybourne-Smith School of Architecture and Design. Dr Garnaut’s research focuses on Australian 20th century town planning and architectural history and heritage. She currently holds an ARC Discovery Grant, Rediscovering historical contributions in environmental planning: Australia’s Town Planning Associations ($164,768).

Early Career Researcher

This award recognises Early Career Researchers who have demonstrated excellence in research achievement in the 5 years after their doctorate was awarded.

Humanities - Dr Jonathan Crichton - School of International Studies
Dr Jonathan Crichton is a lecturer in applied linguistics and a research fellow in the Research Centre for Languages and Cultures, School of International Studies. His research focuses on the intercultural dimension of internationalisation with a particular relationship to the higher education sector. He has published in international refereed journals, has book chapters in international publications. His most recent book, Language in organisational ecology: A multi-perspectived study of the commercialisation of professional practice, is in press.

Social Sciences - Dr Jillian Dorrian - School of Psychology
Dr Jill Dorrian is currently employed as a Lecturer in the School of Psychology. Her primary area of research interest is sleep, circadian rhythms and performance. Dr Dorrian was recently awarded an ARC Discovery Grant with Dr Gregory Roach, Centre for Sleep Research, The predication of sleep/wake behaviour based on physiological and social factors ($210,000). She is an associate investigator on a current NHMRC Grant and is a chief investigator on industry tenders for healthcare and rail totalling more than $220,000. She has published three book chapters and 24 peer-reviewed journal articles, five within the top two sleep research journals. Dr Dorrian has been cited in more than 50 articles and has presented her work at more than 10 international scientific conferences.

Supported Researcher of the Year

Associate Professor Michele Simons and Professor Barbara Pocock are the joint winners of the 2007 Supported Researcher of the Year award, with only one quarter of a point separating them. This award is based on their research income, publications and PhD completions for the last two years.

Dr Alan Barnes - School of Education
Dr Alan Barnes has supervised three doctoral students to completion in the last two years, with an average completion time of 2.98 years and average examiner score of 2 (Pass with minor corrections).

Supervisor of the Year - Masters by Research
Dr John Barbour - South Australian School of Art
For the second year in a row, Dr John Barbour is awarded Masters by Research Supervisor of the year. Dr Barbour has supervised nine students to completion in the last two years, with an average completion time of 2.4 years and average examiner score of between 1 (Pass forthwith) and 2 (Pass with minor corrections).

Best Community Engagement
Ms Deirdre Tedmanson - School of Social Work and Social Policy
Ms Deirdre Tedmanson has a long involvement in community-based research and has built string relationships with a number of community groups, particularly the Indigenous communities in the Anangu Pitantjatjara lands. Ms Tedmanson’s skill in community engagement with Indigenous communities was recognised at a national level when in 2005 she was invited to be the lead South Australian researcher in the Desert Knowledge CRC Core Project 5, Better services for desert settlements. In addition to her work with communities in the APY lands, Deirdre has been involved in a range of contract research involving extensive community engagement such as a Review of Aboriginal Alternative Care in the Northern Country Region for Families SA conducted jointly with the lead of colleague Ann Killen and in partnership with Indigenous researchers Tim Agius and Alwyn Chiong of the SA Aboriginal Health Council. Ms Tedmanson’s engagement with the community has translated into ARC and AIATSIS category 1 research funding.

Best Collaborative / Interdisciplinary Research Project
Dr Pip Williams, Dr Natalie Skinner, Professor Barbara Pocock - The Australian Work and Life Index

The Australian Work and Life Index (AWALI) is a unique new measure of work and life interaction in Australia. The Index draws on three disciplinary perspectives: psychology, employment relations and public health. The collaboration between Dr Williams (public health), Dr Skinner (psychology), and Professor Pocock (employment relations) not only resulted in the development of a new national measure, but also a national report, several submitted publications and public presentations. Recently, the SA Government committed to funding the AWALI until 2010 and has adopted the Index to measure work-life interactions in its strategic planning targets.

Research Support Staff Member of the Year
Mrs Jill Gregory - School of Social Work and Social Policy
and
Ms Jody St Clair - David Unaipon College of Indigenous Education and Research

Mrs Jill Gregory and Ms Jody St Clair are the joint winners of the Research Support Staff Member of the Year.

Mrs Gregory is the Research Support Officer in the School of Social Work and Social Policy. She has been involved in supporting Associate Professor Dale Bagshaw in her role as Research Portfolio Leader, Dr Nicole Moulding in her role as Research Degrees Coordinator, and Dr Sue King in her role as coordinator of the Social Policy Research Group. She has built the research section of the School’s website and organised speakers for the Building Knowledge to Make a Difference monthly seminars.

Ms St Clair is a Project Officer for the David Unaipon College of Indigenous Education and Research. She has coordinated the submission of 14 RFTs of which DUCIER has won eight, many of these winning projects have involved staff from other areas within the University, external Universities and outside organisations. She has also created working relationships with Flinders University, Adelaide University, DEST, ANU, the Aboriginal Health Council and the Department of Education (Victoria).
