Will the Supported Researcher Scheme change as the RQF is introduced?
At the moment, we dont know how the introduction of the Research
Quality Framework (RQF) will impact the Universitys reporting requirements.
The introduction of the Quality Pathway in 2006 was the first step in
aligning the Supported Researcher Scheme with the RQF. There may be changes
to the Supported Researcher Scheme to better reflect the RQF requirements.
The Division Research Office will inform you of any changes to the Supported
Researcher Scheme.
If I have a Category 1 research grant going over 3
years, do I get supported researcher status via the quality pathway for all
3 years?
If you are a chief investigator named on the original grant application,
you will receive Supported Researcher status via the quality pathway for
each year you receive Category 1 income, in this case three years.
If I am not named as a Chief Investigator on the
original grant application, do I receive any points towards Supported
Researcher Status?
Supported Researcher points are awarded to the chief investigators named
on the original grant application. Unfortunately those who work on the grant
but are not named as Chief Investigators, do not receive any points towards
Supported Researcher status.
Yes. To be awarded an APDI the ARC assess the track record of that person and the grants are awarded on this basis. For the purposes of supported researchers these staff would be considered as chief investigators.
What income category is a Carrick Grant?
If the project that is awarded the Carrick Grant meets the definition of research then Carrick grant income is classified as Category 2 income Other public sector income. However, please note that not all Carrick Grants are for research projects and each project will be assessed individually.
What if an online journal doesnt have an ISSN?
If a journal does not have an ISSN then it cannot be reported via the Higher Education Research Data Collection even if it is a refereed journal.
According to the Higher Education Research Data Collection Specifications (DEST, 2007) Journal Articles:
must have an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN)
How do I identify the ISI Web of Science ranking of a journal?
To identify the ISI Web of Science ranking of a journal, you need to do the following:
-
Search for the journal in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) database located on the Web of Science home page.
-
Identify the subject category(s) the journal belongs to.
-
Select the subject category and sort the category according to Impact Factor.
-
Determine the top 25% of journals within the category.

For conference publications which date is used the publication date or the date of the conference?
The date that features on the full text publication is used to indicate the year of publication. This could mean that a conference publication earns Supported Researcher points in a year different to when the conference took place.
If two dates appear on a publication then the latest date is used. For example, Journal of XXXX, Issue 20, 2006 2007 - the publication would be reported in the 2007 collection to be undertaken in 2008.
What is the points threshold for Adjuncts?
The points thresholds are the same as paid staff (i.e., Adjunct Professor 5.0 points, Adjunct Senior Lecturer 3.0 points etc.).
If I dont spend my Supported Researcher funding within the year, will it be withdrawn?
No - you may accrue funds.
Are there any other pools of money paid to the schools available for researchers?
It is probably best to check with your Research Portfolio leader or Head of School to determine what school-based financial support is available for researchers.
