Assunta Russo

Bachelor of Arts (Aboriginal Policy & Management) [now Bachelor of Arts (Aboriginal Studies)], Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services)
Graduated 2007

I have always been interested in helping people and decided I wanted to work with youth and Indigenous groups.
I am about to start my first industry placement, working with a youth development officer at the City of West Torrens. For four weeks I will get a feel for the work and profession. Part of my role will include organising a bus tour for youth from the western suburbs, establishing a youth magazine and taking some students from the Ashford Special School on an excursion.

Joanne Saw

Bachelor of Architecture
Fifth-year student

UniSA offers a very practical-based architectural program and its graduates have great employment results.

During the degree, I undertook work experience with an architectural practice, which taught me a lot. Study may equip you with the technical and design knowledge but practical experience is invaluable allowing you to apply and test your knowledge in a real-life environment.

The architecture program is quite intensive and the requirements for design as well as research skills will definitely prepare me for the workplace. Studios are set up to provide similar environments to what you would find in an architectural practice. Additionally, working on team-based projects has provided me with organisational and leadership skills which would be highly valued in any profession.

Michael Bowen

Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Education
Third-year student

Over the course of a full year I was a student teacher at Valley View Secondary School. At first this involved simple observation and getting a feel for the teaching experience.
Later I took on teaching duties myself and also became heavily involved in new curriculum development projects at the school. These experiences have not only helped equip me with the skills to become a competent teacher, they have also helped me develop great professional networks and future job opportunities.

Jose Nevares

Bachelor of Management (Marketing),
Bachelor of Arts (International Studies)
Third-year student

Studying at UniSA as an international student has been very rewarding. Ive really enjoyed my program as it has given me real business experience.

During the program, I had the opportunity to undertake work experience with a very renowned South Australian winery while working for the Winegroup at the School of Marketing. It was a very valuable experience - I learned so much more than what I would have learned by just going to lectures and tutorials.

UniSAs academic staff are excellent. Most of my teachers are very understanding and make lectures and tutorials really interactive. Plus, UniSAs academic and social support services are very good - especially the Students Association and Learning Connection.

Kimberley Eckermann

Bachelor of Education (Design and Technology)
Third-year student

I have always wanted to become a teacher and love building things so this course is perfect for me. I like the fact that we receive the training that we will need once we graduate, and the hands-on training at TAFE is a crucial part of our studies.

When I graduate, I will have completed four school placement practicums, where I teach in a classroom environment. This time spent in a school setting is invaluable, as you learn a lot in such a short amount of time. You cant learn everything in a lecture - you learn so much more about yourself as a teacher when you have a class standing in front of you waiting for instructions.

Lyndall Edson

Bachelor of Industrial Design
Fourth-year student

I chose UniSA because it is the only university in Adelaide that offers a Bachelor of Industrial Design. I like the idea that there are so many areas of Industrial Design, and through good design I can help to create products that are beneficial to people, as well as the environment. And the program director of Industrial Design was so excited when talking about the subject that I felt it was something to be excited about!

During my degree I undertook work experience at an Industrial and Graphic Design consultancy. This enabled me to see how the skills Im learning at Uni are applied in the workplace, and how vital they are.

Karen White

Bachelor of Education (Adult, Vocational and Workplace Learning)
Fifth-year, part-time student

I chose to undertake this degree because I am currently employed in the field as a Nurse Educator. This program has already given me valuable knowledge, insights and skills that are highly relevant to my field of work. It has definitely improved my ability to deliver a quality service to my employer, and to the participants in my own program.

During my studies, I received a scholarship to travel overseas on exchange to South Korea, presenting me with a fantastic opportunity to undertake an intensive cultural and language program. I work with many nurses for whom English is a second language, and the exchange experience has given me valuable personal insights that will increase my capacity to support these individuals.

Anastasia Koutsamanis

Bachelor of Interior Architecture
Graduated 2007

UniSA gave me the tools I needed to work successfully within the interior architecture industry. The staff had extensive industry experience within a great variety of design disciplines, offering a vast range of knowledge and ideas.

During my degree I undertook work placements in a medium sized practice, and a large interstate practice. This invaluable experience gave me an understanding of two comparatively different work environments, and helped me when I entered full-time work, making it seem much less daunting.

The highlight of my university experience was meeting so many creative people to share and generate ideas with. The quality of work produced amongst my peers during the program was a source of inspiration throughout my studies.

Andrew Fuss

Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) [now Bachelor of Journalism]
Third-year student

Ive always been interested in current affairs and news so the Bachelor of Arts
(Journalism) really appealed to me. Ive enjoyed the program; the subjects are interactive, interesting, and focus on on-the-job skills as well as theory. Plus, the teaching is excellent. My tutors have excelled in giving detailed feedback, even at the last minute. Teaching staff at UniSA treat you as equals, making it easier to develop a good relationship.

This year, Ill be doing an internship, and our Media Law class will have sessions at Minter Ellison law firm. Im also doing some work for a football website, which has been invaluable in teaching me how to interview and interact with people on a personal basis.

Jo Harvy

Bachelor of Media Arts
Third-year student

I enjoy making films because its a passion of mine. Its a lot of fun, albeit stressful at times. I think its good that as we become more advanced in our skills we are given more and more freedom to make what we want I also like how Ive been able to complement my film major with related electives such as scriptwriting and performing arts subjects.

Vanessa Pearce

Bachelor of Arts (Communication and Media Management)
Graduated 2007

This course allowed me to study a range of media subjects, including public relations, marketing, advertising and journalism. Its helped greatly with my career. My studies during the program have been useful and applicable to my current job in marketing. I really enjoyed having the freedom in this course to study subjects from different faculties. During my second year, I undertook work experience in marketing at Bernie Lewis Home Loans, which became part-time paid work. It was a really valuable experience because I received practical on-the job experience and had the opportunity to apply my knowledge while still studying. And, I was offered a full time position at the end of my program, so the experience was very worthwhile.

Lisa Brzezinski

Bachelor of Science
Graduated 2005
Bachelor of Education (Middle and Secondary) Graduate Entry
Second-year student

UniSA offered the courses that best suited me and my chosen career path. The Graduate Entry education degree is the best degree out of all the other degrees/diplomas offered at other universities. Its given me the hands on experience and skills that I will be able to use once working in the field of education.

The program has allowed me to put into practice the theory taught during the courses. During the practicum placements and work experience, I met many people that shared their knowledge and their experiences with me, while learning a lot at the same time. And ive established good working relationships with people that I can rely on for help throughout my degree and beyond.

Georgina West

Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement & Health Studies), Bachelor of Education (Middle & Secondary)
Second-year student

This program is designed to equip students with the skills and qualities needed to be a good teacher allowing you to start your career as soon as you graduate. Practical teaching experiences are incorporated into the degree so you get a feel for what youll end up doing.

During my studies, Ive undertaken a field study coaching Year Three basketball which was really rewarding. I also did practical teaching over two weeks at senior school level, which I really enjoyed.

Doing is different to knowing: especially with teaching. You have to find ways of organising and imparting what you know through effective teaching methods - and the kids have to be engaged and have fun.

Andrea Seaman

Bachelor of Applied Languages and Intercultural Communication
Second-year student

Ive always enjoyed studying every aspect of the Japanese language and culture and I wanted to pursue a career in which I could practice my passion. I knew this program would be perfect because it will prepare me to become linguistically and culturally proficient in my chosen sphere, and assist me with local, national and international employment opportunities.

This degree has allowed me to study a broad range of cultures and languages from around the world. Learning the important aspects of how to become an effective intercultural communicator, and understanding the different structures and features of human languages has been an enjoyable experience which I feel will greatly assist me in future professional contexts.

Helen Feist

Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services) (Honours)
Graduated 2005

At UniSA, you get theoretical knowledge and also valuable practical skills in areas like managing projects and research policy. You also have the opportunity to develop that practical base and your theoretical knowledge through field education.
UniSA staff are really supportive, they are interested in me as a person and my career goals. Being able to connect to work opportunities through staff is also very useful. Ive made lifelong friends from my time at UniSA and lifelong career choices too its been valuable and a very supportive study environment.

Christina Phung

Associate Degree in Languages and Culture Studies, Bachelor of Social Work
Third-year student

One of the things I enjoy most about studying at UniSA is the lecturers who are passionate about what they teach and experience in their field. They make a lot of effort to help you apply theory in the classroom to events in the real world.
During my degree, I spent five weeks in France doing a French study tour, including language study and historical and cultural tours in different regions of France. I had the privilege of staying with French families and experiencing both city and country life in France. The experience opened my eyes. It is only when you truly experience living a different cultural lifestyle that you are able to critique what you have been taught.

Eva Marchuk

Bachelor of Arts (Aboriginal Studies)
Third-year student

UniSA is great place for learning and the online environment and support is excellent. Ive
really enjoyed learning about Australias Indigenous histories and hope to use this knowledge as an educator. After graduating, I hope to commence post-graduate study in Secondary Education, eventually working in Indigenous education.

During the program, I completed Kaurna Language and Culture, learning Kaurna songs to share with kindergarten students. Ive also mentored Aboriginal high school students. The course also included a Flinders Rangers field trip, which was an excellent cultural experience, and introduced me to some unique Indigenous experiences.

This degree has given me life skills which I can use, wherever I work in the future.

John Thearle

Bachelor of Arts (International Studies),Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
Graduated 2007

I felt that International Studies was a discipline that wouldnt restrict me to any particular field. The opportunity to expand my knowledge of the world and broaden my own horizons at the same time really appealed to me. A big highlight of this degree was the opportunity to study overseas for a semester. I undertook an exchange to the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile in Santiago, Chile. During this exchange, I was able to take much of what Id learned at UniSA into another context and apply it similarly. The opportunity to discuss issues that Id previously covered in coursework at UniSA with Chilean students or other exchange students from different backgrounds was invaluable.

Jordanna Schriever

Bachelor of Arts (Journalism), Bachelor of Arts (International Studies)
Graduated 2006

This program helped me find work at a regional newspaper and then a cadetship at The Advertiser. Both degrees taught me the basics of what it takes to be a journalist and broadened my understanding of the world.

During this double degree, I did a placement with Messenger Newspapers. I also spent a semester doing breakfast news on Radio Adelaide, which was fantastic on-the-job experience. The degree offered really valuable learning experience. In a newspaper office, you quickly learn about real deadlines and get a better understanding of the realities of working in the field. Plus, you get to put into practice what youve learnt through lectures and tutorials.

Kyla Raby

Bachelor of Arts (Journalism), Bachelor of Arts (International Studies) [now Bachelor of Journalism, Bachelor of Arts (International Studies)]

I have a keen interest in both journalism and international studies so this double degree was perfect for me. The quality of UniSA staff is very high. Its easy to get your questions answered from campus central, lecturers, tutors and course co-ordinators there are a lot of people to help you when you need it.

The academic staff take an interest in your learning and are very supportive.
During my degree, Ive worked as a media assistant at the Arthritis Foundation of SA, and as a journalist for the 2006 University Games, and the 2007 World Police and Fire Games.
Hands-on experience is the best its given me the opportunity to put into practise the theory Ive studied.

Caroline Rosenthal

Bachelor of Management, Bachelor of Arts (International Studies)
Graduated 2007

I chose UniSA because many of the degrees are recognised internationally. It also has numerous affiliations around the world which give students the opportunity to study overseas.

In my fourth year at UniSA, I completed 6 months of my degree in Bordeaux, France. It was a great experience, enabling me to study abroad with a small group of other international students. It was definitely the highlight of my degree.

This degree has helped me understand all the complexities of working within a business environment. In addition to accounting, marketing and business development, its given me a better understanding of international management, making me better equipped for employment in todays world of multi-national corporations.

Matthew Sierocinski

I chose to study at UniSA knowing that UniSA had the right program for me. I want to get into the media/public relations field and my degree has helped me immensely. The communication practicum I am undertaking now is giving me great preparation for the workforce. Ive also been awarded a scholarship to study in Denmark and Ill be undertaking work placement as well Im really looking forward to it.

The most enjoyable thing about my degree? The amazing, talented and incredibly intelligent fellow students Im proud to share company with. And my tutors have all been wonderful they all have been incredibly helpful and dedicated to my education.

Nicholas Wright

Bachelor of Education (Junior Primary and Primary)
Graduated 2006

Currently working in Switzerland

In each year of the program I completed a full-time teaching practicum in a primary school for four to five weeks. Initially, I just observed current teachers and became familiar with the school environment. The I was able to teach the class with the support and guidance of a professional mentor. I chose to do one placement in Mount Gambier in a school of 72 students which I really enjoyed because I felt part of the community and the school.

During my study, I was offered a scholarship-funded exchange program to visit South Korea for three weeks. As a group, we worked with Korean students to improve their English and also learnt about their culture and language. It was an amazing experience and I learnt a lot while gaining a greater understanding and respect for another culture and society.

Claire Bryan-Hancock

Bachelor of Psychology [now Bachelor of Psychological Science]
Third-year student

I chose to study psychology because I was seeking a course that offered exciting opportunities and challenges. UniSA offers a relaxed environment, extensive on-campus resources and knowledgeable staff that are always willing to help you.

During my degree, I undertook work experience with Drug Arm, an organisation which helps troubled youth. I also did work experience at Howard House, a hospital for people suffering from dementia. Through this work experience, I was able to learn about the role of a psychologist outside of university, enabling me to apply theoretical learning to a practical situation in the workforce. I really enjoy studying psychology and I believe that it is a field that can greatly contribute to todays society.

Sharyn Dixon

Bachelor of Arts (Aboriginal Studies), Bachelor of Social Work
Graduated with Honours, 2006

I found the double degree fascinating and studying at UniSA has opened many doors for me. During the degree, I did my placement at a domestic violence service. It brought together the theory I had learned and gave me a sense that social workers actually help people in crisis.
I am now confident about moving into the workforce when I graduate.

Carmen Lewis

Bachelor of Public Relations
Second-year student

Through the PR teaching staff I have been made aware of a number of associations within the PR industry which I have joined. This opened up networking opportunities and gave me a chance to develop contacts and relationships before I had even finished studying, I know these will be invaluable when I graduate.

Valentina Pavic

Bachelor of Psychology (Honours)
Third-year student

I chose to study psychology at UniSA partly due to my life experience growing up in a war-torn nation. I have a strong desire to assist those in need, particularly when it comes to emotional and psychological issues. I also have a great interest in human behaviour and the workings of the mind.

Throughout my degree, Ive volunteered as a youth worker at the Multicultural Youth of South Australia (MYSA) centre. As a volunteer at MYSA Im able to utilise the knowledge Ive learned during my program to assist professional youth workers with their assessments. This experience has enabled me to explore the issues and difficulties experienced by refugee youth.

Adele Kirby

Bachelor of Arts (Professional Writing and Communication)
Graduated 2005

Because my degree was so broad, it gave me skills in many areas, which is extremely helpful on a CV. Im now working as the New Media Assistant at The History Channel UK.

During my degree, I participated in a video teaching trip with the Media Resource Centre, teaching rural kids basic video skills. My work with Student TV involved reports, grant submissions, presentations and television production, and I was always actively involved with community committees, producing brochures and newsletters with my writing and desktop publishing skills.

I was blessed with amazing tutors and lecturers. They were all deeply engaged with and passionate about their subject area; enthusiastic with their teaching; and highly accessible.

Claire Brideson

Bachelor of Early Childhood Education
Graduated 2007

This degree gave me the professional knowledge and practical experience to effectively work with and care for young children. I liked the range of courses offered in the program; there was a good mix of both theory and practical.

From the beginning, I got a taste of what it was like to be a caregiver and educator out in the field. This practical experience shaped my approach to my study, and motivated me to persevere. I also had the opportunity to work with a wide range of children of various ages and from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. It was really valuable to have the opportunity to work with families and other services in the community.

Amy King

Bachelor of International Business / Bachelor of Arts (International Studies)
Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
Graudated 2007

Studying a degree of this scope has given me the preparation to undertake further language study and postgraduate research as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University.

During this degree, I spent 12 months studying at Okayama University, Japan. I was also Australian representative to the Asia-Pacific International Forum, Japan, a delegate at the Australasian Model UN Conference and a young member of the Australian National Commission to UNESCO.

Although there is much students can learn about international relations in the classroom, these various practical experiences have given me a first-hand taste of policy creation, diplomacy and the work of international organizations. Being able to apply the theoretical side of international relations to the real-world is fascinating.

Jo Barton

Bachelor of Applied Science (Recreation Planning and Management)
Graduated 2006

Bachelor of Education (Primary and Middle) Graduate Entry
Second-year student

This degree had the largest scope and provided the most opportunity to teach at either end of the spectrum.

At UniSA, Im continually inspired and feel like Ive chosen a noble profession that is capable of making a difference. I've developed sound relationships and had networking experience, as well as experience in the field. I joined education associations, discovered job prospects and opportunities and gained a thorough theoretical and practical foundation for my chosen profession.

My first teaching practicum was tough. I thought the kids would eat me for breakfast, but I survived, and I loved it. I learnt a great deal from my fellow colleagues, the teaching staff and my lecturers.

Joey Quiniones

Bachelor of Education (Design and Technology Education)
Third-year student

I participated in my first placement for two weeks last year. It was an observation placement so I observed various classes in the design and technology areas. I also had a mentor at the school and we worked together to plan lessons. The placement gave me practical experience in dealing with misbehaving students and the teachers were extremely welcoming and helpful. They also gave really useful advice from their personal experiences which gave me a different perspective on various issues.
