UniSA students based in regional South Australia have some new
flexibility in their study choices this year.
Students who have been enrolled as “external” students in a range of
programs have the opportunity to study their core courses and some
elective courses in a real life classroom on-campus.
Explaining the new options, Head of Business for the Centre for Regional
Engagement, Dr Janet Sawyer said that for many students who are studying
a degree program offered externally, there were common core courses with
programs offered at the University of South Australia’s Mount Gambier
Regional Centre. Some courses offered could also be credited as
electives in your chosen field of study.
“We now want to take advantage of that and welcome external students to
some of the core course classes available,” Dr Sawyer said.
“While external studies are invaluable for many working students or
people who are quite a distance from a University – providing the option
to attend classes internally on-campus will offer new benefits for those
who can take up the opportunity.”
Regional student Tracey Watson, is completing her Bachelor of management
externally through UniSA City West campus in Adelaide.
“I discovered that over the next study period some of my courses will be
offered in Whyalla via the Centre for Regional Engagement so I am really
keen to take this opportunity to study on campus with a class of other
students,” Watson said.
“This will be a real boost and give me the chance to experience uni in a
new way and benefit from real time interaction with other students. The
bonus of doing this in the Centre for Regional Engagement is the smaller
class sizes, which means more opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss
topics and benefit from the collective ideas of other students.”
Dr Sawyer said there were important aspects of learning fulfilled by the
classroom situation including developing and interacting within a group
dynamic and the psychological bonus of connecting with a group of people
sharing the same learning challenges.
“External study opportunities really are a vital option for people in
regional and remote communities and people who have to balance the
demands of careers and family with their study – but it is wonderful to
be able to offer this flexible new option for face-to-face class time
for many of our students located in the regions.”
