Guide to being a good student (in the mentor scheme!)
The items listed below are certainly not exhaustive but merely
provide a few suggestions.
- Ask your mentor about dress codes for their office. As a minimum we
would suggest smart casual. This means smarter than a T-shirt, jeans and
runners.
- Always confirm meetings. For example if your meeting is on
Wednesday, ring your mentor by at least Monday and confirm. You may also
choose to send a letter/email to confirm. Remind your mentor of the
meeting AND the activity.
- Remember always that your mentor is busy, has budgets to meet and
participates in this scheme free of charge. However be assured that the
mentors wont bite and they have undertaken to get right behind this
scheme. They are very keen for it to work. Dont be embarrassed or feel
uneasy about asking for information, if you have gone overboard they
will tell you.
- Do not be late for meetings or other obligations. If you happen to
be running late for some very genuine reason, call the mentor and
explain.
- Ask questions. A tip here is to think about your meetings well prior
to getting into the lift. You will know what activity you will be doing,
so think about what you want out of it. Write your questions down on a
piece of paper and take it with you. I am sure your mentor would be most
impressed with this approach.
- If introduced around the office, remember to look people in the eye
and give a firm handshake. If you dont catch the name, a simple how do
you do will suffice. In the event you meet the State Manager, then you
DO catch their name.
- Ask the mentor what you should call him/her. Dont be embarrassed
about asking, at your age/status it is courteous to ask rather than
assume.
- Remember that some of the information you will be exposed to may be
confidential. Always respect and be aware of the confidentiality of
information.
