'Writings of War' Symposium

Magill Campus, UniSA
June 22nd and 23rd, 2007

Keynote speaker:
Dr Peter Stanley
Director of the new Centre for Historical Research
National Museum of Australia

On behalf of the School of Communication and the
C3 – Cultures of Conflict research group
I welcome you to the second annual symposium on the Writings
of War. First held in 2006, the ‘Writings of War’ symposium is an opportunity to
experience a selection of research, reflections and investigations about the ways
in which conflict and the traumas of wartime are represented in words and
image.
This year will once again feature the broad variety of topics – from letters
home from Australian soldiers during the first World War, to the recent death of
Private Jake Kovco, and to how war and the aftermath of conflicts is
commemorated today.
The ‘Writings of War’ symposium is presented by the ‘Cultures of Conflict’
research concentration, an integral element of the C3 (Creative Cultures and
Communication) group, within the School of Communication. The symposium
offers a showcase of research from the general public and the academic
community of teachers and research students. For some, the papers they
present will be part of their professional or research endeavours, and for others,
the work reflects a passion for investigation they wish to share.
The papers you hear at the symposium will be published in a monograph,
scheduled for release later this year. The monograph will also feature the
collection of papers delivered at last year’s symposium, making for a substantial
volume.
On behalf of the staff and students of the C3 – Cultures of Conflict research
group, I thank all our presenters, especially our interstate guests, for their
contribution to the symposium. I trust you find the seminar rewarding and the
discussions and conversations stimulating. We hope then to welcome you to
next year’s symposium.
