Master of Engineering (Microsystems Technology)
LMEE - Stream F

The Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) is a rapidly emerging chip technology that produces “micro-machines” and structures the size of a grain of sand.

The development of MEMS combines electrical, electronic, mechanical, optical, material, chemical, and fluids engineering disciplines. These are typically fabricated into a substrate that may also contain electronics needed to interact with MEMS devices.

The MEMS technology is a direct extension of the traditional microelectronic integrated circuit technology.

Growth of MEMS opportunities for graduates continues at an accelerated pace, as microfabrication technology is applied to a wider range of industrial, medical and scientific applications. Demand for professional qualifications in this area of Microtechnology will be high and will increase in the coming years. Market projects are showing a clear indication of the potential for this far-reaching technology.

Recent establishment of national and state networks such as the Australian Microelectronics Networks (AMN) and the Spider Silicon Network of South Australia are indications of the growing importance MEMS will have on future Microsystems for use in a wide range of applications.

Some examples include high speed, high bandwidth fibre communications networks, large array DNA chips capable of sequencing millions of base pairs per hour foretell the day when genetic analysis will become commonplace with disposable, “Lab-on-a-chip” tools.

The School of Electrical and Information Engineering is a member of both of the organisations mentioned above, which enables up-to-date techniques and knowledge to be passed on to students.

Postgraduate Degrees by Research

CMST offers research opportunities to candidates wishing to pursue a Masters program or PhD in Electronic Engineering with specialisation in Microsystems Technology. The Centre provides facilities for research, guidance and supervision throughout the program.
