ADR in a Care and Protection Context
|
| Rhonda Stien |
| The provision of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in a
care and protection context is an initiative introduced in New South Wales with the
proclamation of the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act, 1998 (the
Act). The presentation will include discussion on the NSW Department of Community
Services (DoCS) model and some of the challenges experienced as the welfare
statutory authority in providing ADR by staff to our clients. Challenges to be discussed
include providing cohesive services to a diverse client group across a large geographic
area. Often, in addition to the care and protection concerns of the child or young person,
there can be the presence of domestic violence, mental health issues and substance abuse
and different service delivery models. |

non-government sectors. Some of her key achievements include establishing a new agency
from scratch in a rural area, which after 5 years resulted in 5 professional services and
two geographic locations and the development of a traditional Foster Care service into a
comprehensive range of services for hard-to-place children. |
