A battery interchange strategy for a solar-powered commuter car

(P Howlett and P Pudney)

In the 2001 World Solar Challenge, Annesley College demonstrated a small conventional car that they had converted to electric. The car was designed for short commutes, and would normally be recharged after 50-100km.

To complete the 3000km journey from Darwin to Adelaide using only solar power, Annesley took with them a truck full of solar panels that could recharge one battery while the other was being used in the car. The group worked with some Annesley students to develop a driving and battery interchange strategy that would maximise the distance the team could travel each day.
