The Australian Centre for Child Protection is sad to
farewell Professor Marianne Berry, Chair and
Director of the Australian Centre for Child
Protection, who has returned to the United States to
be with her family. Professor Berry has been
paramount in guiding the Centre into the
international arena for child protection research
and shaping the Centre's new and exciting future
directions. She is greatly admired and respected by
Centre staff and will be missed.
Emeritus Professor Dorothy Scott has kindly agreed to stand in as interim Director of the Australian Centre for Child Protection. - On 1 of December 2011 the Australian Centre for Child Protection held its first, highly successful Open Day, welcoming students and interested professionals to the Centre. Visitors enjoyed an informal chat with Centre staff over tea, coffee and nibbles before listening to a presentation by our Deputy Director Leah Bromfield about the Centre's current projects and future directions, followed by an informal Q&A session. Information about potential Honours and higher degree student projects was also disseminated.

- Associate Professor Leah Bromfield was interviewed on Channel 7 News, 25 September 2011 in regard to the Child Neglect Inquiry that was never held regarding the 2008 Parafield Gardens case involving 21 children.
- The Governor-General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC, visited UniSA’s Australian Centre for Child Protection on September 12. Ms Bryce, who has been the Patron of the Australian Centre for Child Protection since February 2009, has a long standing commitment to advancing the rights of women and children and a particular interest in the welfare of young people and families. The Governor-General along with her husband met with the Centre’s Director, Professor Marianne Berry and Deputy Director, Associate Professor Leah Bromfield to discuss contemporary child protection issues nationally and internationally and after the meeting met informally with Centre staff and students, the Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Høj and PVC of the Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences, Professor Pal Ahluwalia.

- Shelley Wright, Australian Centre for Child Protection scholarship holder has been nominated as one of three finalists for the Best Clinical Paper Award for Paediatrics at the Occupational Therapy Australia National Conference on the Gold Coast in June 2011. Shelley’s paper is entitled “Is playfulness a key to resilience in vulnerable children?” and is based on part of her PhD which has been funded by the Centre.

Events
- Following the very successful first Child & Family Sensitive Practice workshop, the Centre is running a second workshop over 9 & 10 February 2012. It will provide training for adult service professionals in facilitating child and family sensitive practice.
- Professor Colette McAuley, Chair of Social Work at University College Dublin, visited the Australian Centre for Child Protection on Thursday 1st December to meet the team and discuss her new international project. Professor McAuley was a visiting scholar based at the Centre from Thursday 1st December to Monday 5th December.
- Child & Family Sensitive Practice workshop 24 & 25 November 2011. Training for adult service professionals in facilitating child and family sensitive practice.
- Professor Marianne Berry, delivered a Knowledge Works lecture entitled "Critical Components of Service in Preventing Child Abuse and Preserving Families" for the University of South Australia on 11 October 2011.
