Starting a CAHE Journal Club

Do you want to start an Allied Health Journal Club in your department? There are a number of questions to consider before getting starting and we have created the CAHE JC getting started checklist to simplify this process for you.

If you would like to know more about how the CAHE Allied Health Journal Clubs work visit the How the CAHE Journal Club works webpage for more information.

Questions to consider prior to embarking on a CAHE Journal Club

1

Is your proposed JC membership single discipline or multidiscipline?

2

Have you identified a range of clinical questions that could be addressed over the next six months?

3

Have all potential JC members had the opportunity to discuss these clinical questions?

4

Have you allocated regular meeting times over the next six months for the JC?

5

Have you found a suitable and regular place for JC to meet?

6

Do you have two committed facilitators for JC?

7

Do you have commitment from all JC members to be presenters for at least one JC each year?

8

Do you have a budget for refreshments etc?

9

Have you discussed JC plans with your manager?

10

Have you obtained overt support from your manager for JC?

11

If no, do you believe that this will be an issue for JC?

12

Will your manager attend some JC meetings?

13

Will your manager champion JC and clinical implementation of JC findings in practice?

14

Do your facilitators require training from CAHE in basic evidence-based practice issues such as hierarchy of evidence, PICO, critical appraisal, basic statistics, etc?

15

Will at least one facilitator be able to attend a one-day CAHE training workshop prior to JC commencing?

16

Have you identified ways in which clinical findings could be implemented into your clinical practice (i.e. quality improvement activities, record audits, etc)?

The above questions are available in a downloadable format for discussion and review with proposed Journal Club members (CAHE JC getting started checklist PDF 169KB).  This checklist is designed to provide an outline of the issues that arise when setting up a checklist and is for internal use prior to requesting a CAHE Allied Health Journal Club be established for your department.
