Pilot testing of CAHE journal clubs
CAHE would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of both DOHSA's Catherine Turnbull, Principle AH Advisor, and CAHE's Matthew Sutton. Catherine and Matt worked tirelessly on the initial stages of this project and provided great support to CAHE Journal Clubs and their members.
The Centre for Allied Health Evidence (CAHE), in collaboration with the Department of Health South Australia (DOHSA) launched its Journal Club initiative, the Allied Health Journal Club, in February 2007. This concept evolved after much discussion between the two parties regarding the most effective means to ensure new evidence and clinical guidelines are making their way to Allied Health clinicians. CAHE and DoHSA recognised the need to involve rural and remote allied health care service providers in addition to urban providers, as research into implementation has identified that particularly rural and remote practitioners face numerous barriers to successful implementation of evidence based practice in health care.
CAHE developed a model of sustainable Journal Clubs, and with the collaborative support of DOHSA, launched a pilot study of the first SA Allied Health (AH) Journal Club in March 2007.
The interest in this project has been exceedingly high as CAHEs Journal Club design enables participating organisations to achieve ownership and autonomy over their own JC. CAHE continues to provide a compendium of critically appraised papers, and Journal Clubs provide an evolving resource that is responsive to relevant research.
This initiative has implications nationally and internationally for AH clinicians and patients. The Journal Clubs provide an exciting model embracing an active and interactive learning environment and will have an impact on teaching methods within our hospitals.
CAHE embraces its pivotal role within this project and is looking forward to working alongside the Department of Health and public health stakeholders.
