Visit by Delegates from three Vietnamese Agencies
20th July 2009
- Delegates from three Vietnamese Agencies, Ministry of Science and
Technology (MOST), Vietnam Academy for Water Resources (VAWR), and the
Institute for Water and Environment (IWE), visited CAGS on 20 July 2009
as part of their Australia-wide search for scientific/technological
solutions to fight against drought and serve sustainable agricultural
development in the central provinces of Vietnam.
- The key delegates included:
- Prof-Dr NGUYEN The Quang (Vice President, VAWR),
- Dr LE Trung Tuan (Deputy Director, IWE),
- Mr LA Van Chinh (Senior Expert, MOST),
- Mr BUI Quy Long (Coordinator, MOST), and
- Mr BUI Hieu (IWE) replacing in his absence Prof-Dr HA Luong
Thuan (Director, IWE).
- This visit was the result of interest shown by the Vietnamese
delegates in Dr John Pisaniello’s and Prof Roger Burritt’s current ARC
Discovery Project: “How to manage on-farm surface water storage for
sustainable and safe catchments”.
- The delegates were initially greeted by CAGS members, Dr John
Pisaniello, Prof Roger Burritt, Mr Arthur Spassis and Ms Tuyet Dam. Dr
Pisaniello, with the kind assistance of Arthur Spassis and Tuyet Dam
then took the Vietnamese delegates on a half-day tour in the Adelaide
Hills to visually demonstrate the issues being addressed by the ARC
Discovery Project.
- The journey included an on-tour presentation by Dr Pisaniello to
further articulate the Australian “dual extreme and cumulative” water
storage issues and potential common threads with Vietnam. Dr Pisaniello
also provided the visitors with an information booklet which included a
copy of his PowerPoint slides, colour photos of all the sites visited,
and summaries of key research activities past and present, which could
lead to potential partnerships.
- The Vietnamese delegates expressed much gratitude for being hosted
in this manner and for being provided with much useful information.
- The delegates kindly presented special hand-made gifts to each of
the CAGS members, which were received by us with much appreciation. CAGS
looks forward to continued contact and association with the Vietnamese
delegates and their organisations, and would welcome research
partnerships with them in future.
