The Centre for Accounting, Governance and Sustainability (CAGS) provides high quality research and world class expertise on accounting and its impacts in today’s fast-changing environment.
CAGS has a primary focus on two major areas of research: Sustainability Accounting and Reporting, and Accounting Scholarship.
Sustainability Accounting and Reporting (SA&R) takes an eclectic view of accounting and highlights the importance of social and environmental issues, in addition to the economic perspective. Focus is on contemporary issues such as Climate Change, Integrated Reporting, Corporate Social Responsibility, Management Accounting for Social and Environmental Issues, and Sustainability Communication. Members of the centre have focused on projects such as climate change reporting in the mining industry, the development of integrated reporting in Australia, public sector sustainability accounting, gender accounting, corporate social responsibility in China, socially responsible investment in Malaysia, role of accountants in sustaining rural communities in Australia, water accounting, material cost-flow accounting, sustainable property development, the development of environmental management accounting and the use of technologies in sustainability communication.
Accounting Scholarship (AS) has a focus on accounting education and use of academic accounting in practice, and dissemination through publication in Accounting Education and other research journals. Emphasis has been on issues such as the listening skills of accounting students, the use of social media in engaging students in accounting education, accounting assessment, the academic-practice gap, and sustainability education.
