Aims of the CAA

The aim of the Centre is to build a reservoir of expertise in 3D anthropometry. In particular it will apply and refine the techniques developed through the Commonwealth contract for development of a mature aircrew and crewstation anthropometry capability for the Australian Defence Force (ADAPT Project). This contract was signed in 2004 and will cease in early 2007.

The CAA will extend the application of 3D anthropometry to other areas of industry and government. 3D scanning is already being used in cosmetic and maxillo-facial surgery, mass customisation of garments, simulation and modeling, and graphic design. Other future applications may be in studies on growth and development patterns, constitutional medicine (i.e., relationships between morphology and disease risk), analyses of secular trends in body size and shape, quantification of body image disturbances, and determination of morphologies characteristic of elite sports people.
