Research proposal process

Before the end of six months full-time candidature (or 12 months part-time) a research candidate must develop, and subsequently maintain, a comprehensive Research Proposal. A Research Proposal is designed to provide a structure and time frame for a candidate's research program and can be used to assess the candidate's progress at times of review. The proposal should normally be between 10 to 20 pages in total length and should have single line spacing.

The comprehensive Research Proposal must be presented to a panel of Academic Research Colleagues from the candidates School, chaired by either the Research Degree Coordinator or another senior academic from the School. The Candidate is given the opportunity to speak on their proposal and receive feedback. Based on this a recommendation on the successful completion of this milestone will be made to the Dean: Research for final approval. Candidates are required to present their proposal for review and receive approval prior to submitting their ethics application.

The Research Proposal provides a structure and time-frame for a candidate's research program. It is a different document from the initial Research Outline prepared with the application for admission to the research degree program.

If the Review Panel considers your proposal to be exemplary, it will be added to the online database of research proposals currently being created by Research Services. This database will serve to assist candidates in preparing research proposals by providing them with examples of a high standard. Please indicate if you do not wish your proposal to be added to the database when you submit your proposal.

Further details regarding research proposal preparation may be downloaded from Research Services. Also, see Appendix 1: Guidelines for the preparation of Research Proposals in the Academic Regulations for the Doctor of Philosophy.
