Research degrees

PhD candidate Reina Ichii (right) with supervisor Professor Rhonda Sharp (left)Doing a research degree allows candidates the opportunity to explore a particular area of interest in greater depth than is possible during a coursework program.

The transition from learning by coursework to learning by research is marked by a transition from benefiting from a body of knowledge (as a candidate) to making a contribution towards a body of knowledge (as a researcher).

The Division of Business has three levels of research degree program, offered both offshore and onshore, that seek to develop candidates' skills as researchers. The aim of each is to encourage the development of an individual's ability to independently define and investigate problems, pursue potential solutions and communicate this process to others.

The breadth and depth of research expertise and interest within the Division means that candidates have the opportunity to undertake a wide range of projects in business and management. This encompasses research into management, policy, planning and performance of organisations (public, private and not-for-profit), and the impacts of the context within which these organisations operate.
