2007
Currently enrolled in a PhD in Mathematics
The Honours program was a challenging but fruitful experience. One of
the most difficult aspects to adjust to was the large degree of autonomy
and self-discipline required. Unlike an undergraduate degree, the days
are not structured hour-by-hour into lectures and tutorials. Such
flexibility is both welcome and dangerous!
I was fortunate to spend the year working with a fantastic supervisor
and a great group of fellow Honours students. In addition, I was able to
gain some tutoring experience and had the opportunity to do some
contract research with the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute.
Honours presents a perfect opportunity for those wishing to gain a feel
for the research experience, and opens the door for future study. Being
immersed in the market-research environment at the Ehrenberg-Bass
Institute gave me an insight into Marketings industry applications, as
well as its main research streams. I was able to chat to senior
researchers about their work, and met several overseas visiting
academics.
One of the main benefits of completing Honours is that it provides the key to many future possibilities. For example, I now have the option of studying overseas, going on to a PhD, or working in a broader range of industries than would have possible with a Maths degree alone.
At the moment I am in a period of transition. After completing Honours I took time off to travel overseas and think about my next step. I am keen to pursue postgraduate studies in the US, in the area of Cognitive Psychology or Neuroscience. I hope to begin study overseas in late 2008. In the meantime, I am looking to secure a graduate position and spend a period working in the industry.
