Why study at UniSA? UniSA offers flexible study arrangements, such as external study. Most of my time at UniSA was as a single mother and this flexibility was extremely important to me. UniSA also offers extra assistance for studying, such as tutors and extra time in exams. The staff in the Unaipon School were committed to helping me achieve my degree. There were also opportunities to receive extra financial assistance through scholarships at UniSA.
Your favourite Indigenous Australian? Indigenous Elder Auntie Veronica Brodie and Gavin Wanganeen
What are you reading? I have just recently married so most of the books I have been reading are either on marriage or parenting.
Who or what inspires you? My daughter Sara, aged 5 and my husband Luke.
Ambition/Aspirations for the future: To be a great wife and a fantastic mother. I want to be a role model for my daughter. I want to show her that it is possible to achieve her dreams. Also, being in Human Resources, I hope to increase employment opportunities for Indigenous people and increase training opportunities which will lead to more Indigenous Australians into positions of power.
What advice can you offer to other Indigenous people wanting to pursue their dreams? Don't listen to those that tell you that you wont make it - Prove them wrong. When you need help, keep asking, until you get it. Most importantly, don't settle for second best, stand up for yourself and follow your dreams.
What would you do like to see happen in the future to better the situation for Indigenous Australians? Compulsory cultural awareness training for students at all universities and in the workplace for managers and employees there are too many people in influential positions that don't have any idea about Indigenous Australians and their culture.
