Standard Operating Environment
ISTS in consultation with local IT support teams have decided that a standard operating environment (SOE) for all staff computers in the university would be a move in the right direction for improved IT support.
This means that all desktops will eventually have the same 'look and feel' including standardised basic software installed and configured.
The benefit for staff is that it will be much easier to move between Divisions or Units as the computer settings will be familiar. For IT support staff, especially the helpdesk, a standard system will make their work easier and more efficient.
On top of the basic SOE, each Division or Unit will add its own software and configurations as required. The rollout of the new image will commence once the testing period is over and BUE IT will only be installing the SOE on new computers or computers that have to be re-imaged.
Some of the changes to the current BUE IT image are listed below. Please note that the configuration type changes need to be fully tested before they become part of the SOE.
- Location of the "documents and settings" folder will be moved to D:\ drive (i.e. My Documents will point to D:\ by default)
- 7-zip replaces IZArc zip
- Firefox & iTunes are installed
- Windows Defender spyware program is installed
- VLC player is the standard video player
- 1Gb size limit for Outlook personal folders (previously was 2Gb)
- Standard UniSA desktop background (can be changed by staff)
- Power scheme setup for 4 star rating (i.e. turn off hard disks after 30 mins)
