Protect your data

All important data should be saved to a shared network drive as all division servers are backed up to tape nightly.  In the event of your computer or laptop having a hardware failure your data will still be stored on the server and not affected.

Laptop Users

Laptop users should be careful to protect themselves against the loss of data; laptops are easier to steal and are more prone to being damaged. Windows XP Professional makes it simple to back up your data.

Windows Backup

The Backup utility in Windows XP helps you protect your data if your hard disk stops working or your files are accidentally erased. With Backup, you can create a copy of all the data on your hard disk, and then archive it on another storage device, such as a hard disk or a tape.

If the original data on your hard disk is accidentally erased, overwritten, or becomes inaccessible because of a hard disk malfunction, you can restore the data from the disk or the archived copy by using the Restore Wizard or the Automated System Recovery Wizard.

To perform a Windows XP backup:

  1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup

  2. You can then walk through the Backup wizard to select which files you want to copy, and where you want to write the backup copy of the data (please write the backup copy of the data to a shared network drive)

  3. When you get to the end of the wizard, there is an Advanced button that provides more backup options. Here you can choose normal or copy (these both back up all marked files every time), incremental or differential (both of these options back up all files that have been changed since the last backup), or daily (which backs up all of the files that were created that day). Copy and differential don't mark the files as having been backed up

  4. As you continue through the wizard, you can specify other options, such as setting up a daily backup schedule that runs automatically. Create a service call requesting assistance from BUE-IT.
