Team Leader - Development Infrastructure at WorkCover
Corporation
Current Employment:
Previous Employment:
January 1994 - Started as a Programmer/Analyst at Coglin
Mill. Since 1995, have been at WorkCover as a
Programmer/Analyst (except for a 6-month stint as a
Contractor Programmer/Analyst at Empower Business Systems)
until recently - when I was promoted to the Team Leader
position.
This program is held in high regard by companies which have
had exposure to it and that has certainly helped fast track me into
a Team Leader position at the age of 25 - a pretty rare thing at
WorkCover. I have also found that the business and management
subjects in the course gave me a more "rounded" education than a
straight computing degree would have. My time in the program wasn't
necessarily a glowing success story, but it was definitely a
learning experience which has held me in good stead since leaving
university.
Name:
Julie Allen
E-mail:
julie.allen@zivo.com
Senior Project Manager at ZIVO Internet Solutions (a member
of the LibertyOne group).
Current Employment:
Previous Employment:
I worked at Andersen Consulting for 6 years prior to joining
ZIVO, working through to the role of Manager. At Andersen
Consulting my specialty was systems design and development
in the utilities and financial services industries. I have
worked extensively overseas, being involved in a large
E-commerce project in Massachusetts during 1997 and 1998. In
Australia, I have worked on consulting engagements for
companies such as Gas and Fuel (before it was sold) and AXA
Australia.
BIS has provided me with two primary advantages. Firstly, the
industry placement opportunities. By the time I had left university
I had spent over 12 months working for some very reputable
companies, in roles that were directly applicable to what I wanted
to be doing in the future. This gave me a confidence and maturity
that allowed for a more seamless integration into working life.
Secondly, was the course content. The BIS Program provides a very
broad range of subjects to ensure a well-rounded level of knowledge.
This has been extremely helpful and highly applicable to the skills
that I have required out in the workforce.

IT Project Team Member at Adelaide City Council
Current Employment:
Previous Employment:
1994-97 - IT Audit Officer at Auditor-General's Department;
1997 - IT Consultant at Coopers & Lybrand; 1998 - 3rd Tier
Oracle Support (Energy Systems Project) at Boral Energy;
1998-current - IT Project Member on the Customer Service
System and IT Help Desk projects at Adelaide City Council.
Industry Mentor for MBIS student, Rod Moreland during 2000.
The fact that the Program is industry focused and involves
sponsor organisations put me in far better shape straight out of
university for employment. Emphasis on important business skills
such as public speaking has been highly relevant in my career.

The mix of subjects - IT resources with a good business
acumen are highly regarded in the marketplace and this is probably
the greatest advantage offered by BIS. The industry seminars and
workshops on law, strategic consulting, motivation, marketing
yourself, etiquette, etc proved to be invaluable and a lot of fun. I
am still very proud of the course today.

Operations.
Current Employment:
Made finding a job easier with the industry experience being
a major attraction for prospective employers. Blend of IT and
business skills allowed an easier transition to the workplace. Had
it been too specific in either area it would have been more
difficult to adapt to either the technical side or business side of
work. Most importantly to me, met three of my best mates.

vsmith@bsal.com.au
May 1998 - present - Systems Analyst and SAP Team Leader at
Bridgestone Australia Ltd.
Current Employment:
Previous Employment:
December 1993 - April 1998 - Programmer/Analyst at Elders

Practical work experience was an advantage when competing
with other graduates for work. Had a good balance of computing and
business studies which has been valuable in bridging the gap between
the "techos" in the IT department and the users.
