Anita is loving Australia and her UniSA experience...............

Undertaking the Master of Library and Information Management with University of South Australia (UniSA) has provided many good opportunities including:

In all I really appreciate the great opportunity that UniSA has afforded me and the brilliant way in which this course has been delivered. Had it not been for the wonderful professional assistance of Drs. Shurville and Voigt, I believe that my confidence let alone graduating would have been a lot more difficult.  I thoroughly recommend and encourage this course to others and have been proud to be associated to such a brilliant learning institution, particularly to those practitioners/administrators who have made my learning journey a life changing and very positive enriching experience.
Congratulations UniSA!

Katie RicherKatie Richer is something of a 'knowledge hound...'

"Ive always been interested in libraries, being something of a knowledge hound. However, when one works full time it is difficult to get into study again, because a lot of the courses are only offered in internal mode.

When I found out about the Master of Library and Information Management and how it was being offered online, I jumped at the chance! The fact that I could do just one course a semester particularly appealed to me; as a school teacher I dont get a lot of free time. It seems that a lot of the things Im learning about will benefit my teaching, and the two careers also fit together well."

Jelina HainesJelina is glad she took the challenge...

'When Graduate Certificate in Business Information Management (Archival and Preservation Management) was offered for the first time the invitation was sent to my husband who was completing his Bachelor of Honours (Aboriginal Studies) at UniSA, City West. I read the invitation and was curious about the Archival and Preservation Management stream as Ive always had an interest in preservation and storage of artworks. I decided to have a look the Business Information Management [BIM] website and check the entry criteria to see if I qualified. I rang Darren to put my name on the information session list which was held at UniSA, City West, unfortunately I didnt managed to attend the information session on that day because I had the flu.

I decided to go ahead with the enrolment and sent of all my paperwork and my C.V., hopeful that I will qualify, while, at the same time, hoping that I wont get offered a place because I am still finishing my basic undergrad degree, so it will be a huge effort to do both at one time. When I received the notification from UniSA that I was accepted into the course, this was time that anxiety and nervousness kicked in. I had my doubts that I wouldnt be able to handle two degrees along with my responsibilities as a full-time carer for my husband, mother and other community responsibilities. I was determined to try and take the challenge and see what happened. Sitting an exam for the first time was a huge challenge for me and I am glad that I was given second chance to sit the exam in another setting where I was more relaxed.

I think my interest in this course was stimulated by my background as an artist. My background lies in visual arts, specializing in Textile & Wearable Art, Environmental art, Wildlife Costume Designing and as a Community Artsworker. With this career I am able to diversify my skills, knowledge and talents in textiles through commission works, collaborative and community art projects.

I am glad that I took the challenge and enrolled in the course in Archival and Preservation Management stream because the knowledge and skills I gained are invaluable. '

Sarah KnightSarah is looking forward to exciting career opportunities...

"I have a background in primary education. I have also been focussing on family commitments for the past 5 years. As a result I have been looking for an opportunity to build on and to broaden the skills I have already with the view to re-entering the workforce. I have always loved finding out things and learning and decided that Library Management could be the best stream for me.

The lectures and practical classes have been incredibly informative and relevant to real life workplace situations. I also enjoy the flexibility of delivery that UniSA offers in this course. There is no need to be locked in (or out) because of other life commitments. There are many opportunities for learning whether you prefer online, face to face, self-directed study or any combination of these there is a mode of delivery that would work for anyone.

This course complements my education background and offers me the opportunity to broaden my professional experience and provides access into exciting new career opportunities. The courses in this program have presented new information frontiers for me to explore. At first, I was a little daunted, but I wasnt going to let the fact that I hadnt been studying in a while conquer me. I now realise there is nothing at all to worry about. I am so enjoying this program of study, experiencing success and am looking forward to continuing on into the higher levels of study."

Swinitha has a zest for learning.....

"I have done post graduate studies at the University of South Australia before and I am very happy to say that my experience has been very positive. My background is Library and Information Management and Knowledge Management. I have worked as a Library Manager. I decided to change my career and looked at a related field and was excited to see the new course 'Graduate Certificate in Business Information Management'.

This year has been very busy and as I worked full time and completed the graduate Certificate as well. I will use the knowledge gained and the experience from my current position as Systems Coordinator (Records Management) to get employment in Records Management."

Quanita LaattoeQuanita has found the Knowledge Management specialisation to be invaluable...

"I have a background in Software Development and currently work as a Management Information Analyst, and immediately jumped at the opportunity to enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Business Information Management. My decision was definitely the correct one for me, as it served to perfectly complement my technical background with solid information management theories and practises. I have utilised a lot of what I have learned (particularly in the theories and Concepts in Knowledge Management topic) in my current role, and still refer to articles I used as reading during the course to assist in my day to day work.

My career goals are to move into a high level project management or leadership role and I am more than confident that the skills I am currently acquiring will put me in good stead to accomplish this. The course is well structured and I have been very impressed with all the topic co-ordinators skills and backgrounds. I also really appreciate the flexibility afforded to students, as this is a definite bonus when working full time.

I am very excited to hear about the new Graduate Diploma and Masters programs and would like to continue my studies until I achieve the Masters"

Gavin ChambersGavin Chambers made the right decision in choosing EDRMS specialisation...

I had been looking to study further for some time but could not find anything relating to my career until I came across an advertisement for the BIM program in the local newspaper. I subsequently attended the information evening and was excited to discover the EDRMS steam which was right up my alley, needless to say I signed up almost immediately.

Now over half way through the first course I can confirm it was the right decision. The course topic and materials are extremely relevant to my career. I find the course very well paced. The weekly communication and discussion group allows one to feel involved even though my course is external study.

I hope to complete the certificate next year and can see myself continuing on now that the diploma and masters programs are available. I would highly recommend study at UNISA and would encourage anyone who is involved in this field to take up the challenge, it is exciting and rewarding.

Brenton HobbsBrenton elected to study Enterprise-wide Services specialisation to further his career...

"The Business Information Management program is incredibly relevant to my career goals of working on and managing ICT projects in a business environment. It was like I had been asked what areas I thought I would like to study.

The program is very flexible, with a range of specialist streams to choose from, and I have found the courses to be relevant, interesting and taught by academic staff with real-world experience to back up their knowledge. The staff are also accessible and so helpful with any queries.

This qualification will be a huge benefit to my career and personal development; I'm already using some of my new knowledge in my current job. I am currently working towards the Graduate Certificate, but I can see myself continuing on and completing my Masters in the next few years.

Kiel describes his choice to undertake the Records Information specialisation..

"As a Records Officer working in the Local Government sector, I have found this course to be both thoroughly informative and enjoyable.

After learning of the Graduate Certificate through State Records of South Australia, I was immediately compelled to enrol with the intention of furthering my education and experience in Records and Information Management, as well as continuing to develop my career prospects in my chosen field.

The teachings of this course are intellectually invigorating, and I have found my eyes opened to a broader perspective of Records and Information Management, not only from a Local Government perspective, but also with relevance to all other government sectors and private industry.

The course also provides fantastic networking opportunities, allowing you to meet and socialise with your peers from various facets of industry, with the goal of developing together in a fantastic learning environment.

Jenni had this to say about the course Preservation Principles...
"I am really enjoying the course. The lectures are the framework. They cover a really broad range of areas that are relevant to any collection - in an archive, museum, library or gallery - and they give us the policy, the ethics, and the practical principles, that good practice needs to take into account.

Then the tutorials make it all real. They are often demonstrations by Artlab staff or State Library people; we have been able to see these principles put into practice, and to talk to people who are experts and have everyday experience dealing with the wide range of areas that the course covers.

The assessment exercises are practical and make us think about how we would approach particular issues.  I have found the course really stimulating and very useful, and it is lovely to meet people working in other fields and to see that we have similar challenges.
