What is a librarian?
Contrary to popular opinion a librarian
does not sit in an office reading
books all day - although many would like to. Information provided to
me has been uploaded here to assist with many of the questions that you have
about being a librarian.
Librarian work levels:
-
a librarian has a postgraduate qualification
-
a library technician is a paraprofessional with a technical (competency based) qualification; usually library technicians obtain their qualifications through TAFE (Technical and Further Education) institutes
-
a teacher-librarian has a teaching qualification plus a library qualification.
Interesting information can be found on the ALIA website using the following links:
-

-
The ALIA Incite magazine sometimes contain advertisements for positions and training courses and can provide examples of careers as well as recent issues related to the profession.
-
Career pathways also provides profiles of librarians listed there - as you will see career paths are many and varied.
By further checking on the internet the American (ALA) site
has an interesting short article entitled
'The
top 10 reasons to be a librarian'. While it has a strong US focus,
you may also find the article and the site useful.
