Assessing
Adelaide’s greenness
Satellite remote sensing imagery is being used to estimate the greenness of the Adelaide Statistical Division (ASD). In this research imagery from a visible and near infrared sensor on board the Japanese ALOS satellite is acquired at six monthly intervals and processed to estimate the greenness of every pixel. Imagery is timed to correspond with the Adelaide seasons of spring and autumn when the climate is conducive to vegetation growth and decline respectively. Greenness of pixels within administrative zones such as census collection districts, suburbs and local government areas are averaged and values used to model change of greenness through time. The research is progressing to find ways to automatically differentiate greenness associated with grass and trees and to correlate change in greenness with climate change.
