Read Su Baker et al's article 'conversation to infinity: on art schools and art education' in Broadsheet (39, 3) Contemporary Art Centre of SA (CACSA)

Professor Su Baker, Chair of the Australian Council of University Art and Design Schools (ACUADS) 2002-8, notes that artists and designers can move more easily beyond their comfort zones because they are natural 'risk takers'.

Degree pathways

Art, architecture and design theory is among the most vocational of all degree pathways. The Theory Spine pathway provides a general education in visual arts, architecture or design which can lead to employment in related areas such as arts administration, gallery management and heritage conservation, as well as providing a sound foundation for further studies in:

  • curatorship
  • museology
  • conservation
  • art and design criticism
  • art therapy
  • art and design journalism

Some graduates find employment in teaching, either in schools or the tertiary sector.
