The Graduate Diploma in Sustainable Design and Master of Sustainable Design allow outstanding candidates the opportunity to undertake an intensive 'hands-on' and information-rich program in a growing and vitally important field of design specialisation, with the potential for significant professional career development.

The Sustainable Design by Coursework program is intended for graduate design professionals in any relevant design discipline interested in upgrading their knowledge and skills in sustainable design practice. These postgraduate programs will be especially relevant to working practitioners and researchers in industrial design, furniture design, packaging design, interior architecture, automotive design, transport and systems design, architecture, urban design and landscape architecture.

The Graduate Diploma in Sustainable Design is an interdisciplinary postgraduate coursework program which can be taken full time over one year or part time equivalent. The program combines theory-based courses with design studio projects to explore multidisciplinary design challenges grounded in both current and future contexts. Specialist electives can be taken from a range of schools across the University, enabling students to further develop their individual knowledge and expertise.

Flexible delivery

The majority of classes are scheduled one evening a week during the University's teaching term. The program's flexible delivery is suited to practitioners who are working as well as studying..

Design studios

The first two semesters of the program are based on a series of 'hands-on' design studios focused on typical real-world sites of 'unsustainability' - in the home, workplace, and urban and global environment.

Seminars

The design studios are complemented by small-group seminars built around key issues. Students investigate and discuss in depth the principles, practices and methodologies of sustainable design.

Specialist electives

The Master of Sustainable Design builds upon the Graduate Diploma with an additional half year full-time or part time equivalent study focused on individual research and design projects.

Design research project

The Master of Sustainable Design includes research skills training, and concludes with an individual design research project, providing scope for further specialisation in sustainable design practice and theory. This final research component provides a recognised pathway towards a research degree

Graduate pathways

Increasing regulation and competition for innovative environmental solutions in the design industries have led to an increasing demand for professionals with a good knowledge of the principles and applications of sustainable design. Graduates from the Sustainable Design programs will be sought after to lead new and improved design solutions and processes, and to lend a competitive edge to existing design practices in industry and the public sector.
