So you want to be a designer or visual artist? - Thursday 10 September 2009
Undergraduate
An undergraduate program at the University of South Australia is a package of individual courses. Once all courses in the program are completed the student holds a degree (Bachelor of Discipline Area) and can go on to do postgraduate study.
A degree by coursework means you enrol in selected courses, attend lectures and tutorials, and are assessed progressively. You will acquire industry and professionally relevant skills, knowledge and research frameworks to achieve your career goals.
To do an undergraduate degree
Go to Future students to see if you are eligible to do an undergraduate degree at UniSA. For specific entry requirements (including English language requirements) go to the Bachelor of Architectural Studies (DBAE) program page.

The Bachelor of Architectural Studies is a pre-professional program recognised by the Australian Institute of Architects (students are eligible for student membership) and accredited by the Architects Board of South Australia
Graduate pathways
Graduates of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies can seek employment within the design and construction industry. However, to become registered architects students must complete the 2-year full-time Master of Architecture (DMAE) postgraduate program (following the 3-year Bachelor of Architectural Studies).
A graduate of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies might also choose to do a postgraduate coursework degree in Sustainable Design

Postgraduate
For students wanting to become registered architects recognised by the Australian Institute of Architects, Architecture within the School of Art, Architecture and Design offers a postgraduate coursework program at Masters degree level (Master of Architecture). To do a degree by coursework you will enrol in selected courses, attend lectures and tutorials, and be assessed progressively.
Research degrees
are offered at
Masters by research and PhD degree levels. Students engage in an intensive individual program of research under the
guidance of an experienced supervisor with research expertise in a specific
area. An applicant for a place in a Masters by research or
PhD program must satisfy the Research Degrees Committee of competence
to undertake a higher degree by research.

The Master of Architecture comprises the final two
years of the five-year professionally
accredited architecture program. Students
must have completed a 3-year Bachelor of Architectural Studies degree or
equivalent from a recognised higher education institution prior to enrolling
in the Master of Architecture Program.
Students refine their technical and communication skills, and solve increasingly complex design problems through the application of skills developed in integrated courses. See Architecture and Design Teaching Research Consultancy for how this works in practice.

The
Architecture program
in the School of Art, Architecture and Design runs
regular trips interstate and overseas. The experience of architecture
and culture in other countries is a vital part of the education of an
architect, and all Architecture students are
encouraged to participate in at least one trip during their studies.
Graduate pathways
The Master of Architecture program is accredited by the Architects Board of South Australia, endorsing the architecture qualifications of graduates required for registration as an architect.
Most graduates work within the traditional field of architecture, running their own practices, or employed by private architectural firms and commercial organisations, by public research and higher learning institutions, and by government agencies.
Many architects develop careers in other areas such as interior design, graphic design, construction management, urban design, heritage consultancy, project management, furniture design, multimedia design, and other related fields.

Students studying a commonwealth supported program pay a student contribution and if eligible may choose to defer this using HECS-HELP (Higher Education Loans Program).
Fees for international students
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units. Fees for international students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation. See Fee information for each program for next year's calculation.
