'carrying loss' (detail), 2006, |
|
An installation consisting of two obliquely interrelated works: a
hand-knitted textile work for the gallery floor and a composite
collage work for the three gallery walls. In this exhibition the
gallery space becomes the open space, or agora. It may be thought of
as a transit region, where destinations are unknown.
The work addresses cultural memory and loss. Its particular focus is on the experience of cultural loss in relation to basic human belonging; it deals with the meanings attached to the experience of being in and out of place, and the memories of city spaces, traversed in the past, re-imagined in the present. The wall piece consists of thousands of paper cuts that together form a vast cityscape, suggesting an 'everywhere/nowhere' urban world made small. Another collection consists of random human figures that together form crowds in which each individual is at once anonymous and present. The floor piece comprises colourful hand-knitted patches, made from cut up used plastic shopping bags. This knit-work attempts to recover what is lost, but cannot provide it in essence. While the 'homely' quality of this work may invite touch, this comforting aspect is deceptive: it is incapable of offering any nurturing warmth. This work attempts the impossible: to re-construct completeness, by any available means. But the collections remain incomplete and may be understood as metaphors for the perpetual sense of loss that is at the heart of all human experience. 'Cinderella II - The Dreamer' is a hybrid of drawing with
interaction and performance, installation, video and sound. It
represents a further investigation of issues addressed in the
installations: Living Edge (2006) and Skin of The Wall (2006). The
work explores perceptions of the home and domestic space as a site
of dreaming and habitation, where the imaginary and the real
co-exist and how one informs the other. During course of the
creation process, I was inviting friends and colleagues to
collaborate in the project by sharing their desires with me. The
goal was to 'materialize' these dreams by converting them into
installation objects. Exhibition invite (PDF 150kb) This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australian Council, its arts funding and advisory body. |
