The theme of the 2008 conference Sites of activity / On the edge focused on bridging the divides between teaching and research in art and design education.

At a 2007 seminar titled 'Place, Space, Text' at the Hawke Research Institute for Sustainable Societies, Paul Carter noted that interdisciplinary research often operates across inherited and profoundly defended boundaries. Yet  successfully addressing the big problems, like managing Australia's water resources, requires collaboration across multiple disciplines. It is clear that the time for being territorial regarding disciplinary boundaries is past. It is also obvious that much exciting and meaningful research takes place outside of disciplinary parameters, indeed often upon the edge. Such research employs our capacity for making connections and allows us to think differently about where we are.
